Agreed.
However, there are lots of extremely scary PG-13 horror films out there. The Ring, for instance. And the Poltergeist films are only regular PG. I don't personally think this film is better than any of those.
Without those violent R-rated scenes this movie would have been a decent PG movie, on par with many of the Hammer films and 70s / 80s horror
I think this film would have made an excellent regular PG film without those unnecessary R-rated violent scenes -- no disrespect intended. It was very artistic and atmospheric. However, the creatures and the Goosebumps-type backstory just seemed more like a film for 11-19 year olds. That's not a bad thing.
The original 1973 movie exceded this in creepiness and would not be inappropriate for younger audiences either -- though the younger audiences today would find the eye candy and special effects and spelled-out storyline of this (2010) movie by far a better movie.
