I agree and also the children always being the snotty rude brats with no proper manners towards adults when spoken to and etc. . I guess the certain writers of these movies want us to hate the main characters from the get go . Thanks draftdubya-274-182961 for your subject post .

at least they avoided the evil stepmother cliche, but yes it's a shame they went with the irrationally irresponsible father instead

There really are only so many different ways to play it, all of them are going to be a cliche because all of them have been done before many times.

The OP's claim that horror movies always make the father into a clueless douchebag is just him seeing what he wants to see. For example, The Conjuring had a father who wasn't clueless or a douchebag.

Don't be a misogynist. We can't do anything to make women feel inferior... even though in real life, they more than likely will try to climb on their husband's shoulders to avoid getting attacked in a truly terrifying situation like this.
