I was terrified and traumatized as a child by the original.
I thought this remake was great! Very well done! A great way to retell this creepy story. I don't think it could have the same type of effect or impact being retold today as it did when it was first on tv back in the 70's.
I greatly enjoyed this movie too - it had a couple of good jump-scares, I think they build up the tension quite nicely. I got appropriately frustrated at the adults who wouldn't believe the child (and then tried to imaging what it would take for me as an adult to believe the child).
Most of all I enjoyed the slow reveal of the creatures. At first they were just shadows and whispers, but slowly we got around to seeing them quite closely - and they looked great!
There are plenty of holes in the film, but I was OK with overlooking them because the excitement got me. It helped watching it at night.. :)
