This show is terribly up and down - there are some funny parts ( especially the visual humour ), but sadly there is just as much likelihood of some laboured, obvious gag, as there is of a funny one.
But, I think diayag brings up the one factor why this show doesn't really work, and that is that the writer is also the star of the show; sometimes that can work, but in this comedy then all we get is just cringe-making self-indulgence.
If you look throughout the series, then all it boils down to is the actor that plays Don writing storylines that see a string of attractive young women fancying him, and on many occasions actually showing him having sex with them !
It is very hard to see this as anything other than an ego-massasing vehicle ( and that goes for his guitar playing/singing too, that didn't actually appear have any relevance to the show until about the 10th episode - other than to show off the actor's guitar/vocal talents ).
He is now making it clear his new housemate Sam likes him, in a ''He's a bit of an oik, but I still kind of fancy him'' way - which, once again, doesn't appear to have any artistic merit in terms of the show, and smacks of him wanting to show households throughout the UK that an attractive woman like Sam fancies a piece of him !
The biggest problem with this trend is the character of Don, who is smarmy, conceited, arrogant, selfish, lazy. He is an unlikeable character that it is very hard to empathise with, so most viewers will either feel neutral about his 'exploits' or actively dislike them. This leads the writer to another tedious feature: he makes all of Abby's/Sam's romantic interests to be complete prats, so as by comparison the viewer thinks: ''Well Don isn't that bad'' eg. ''At least Don doesn't go around sniffing knickers'', ''At least Don doesn't go on a crass, homophobic rant during a date'' etc. etc.
