Original and intelligent Sci-Fi

I love hard Sci-Fi and Sci-Fi with an original idea, which doesn't shirk from radical concepts. Conversely, I hate movies that are made by rehashing old patterns and molded to be all alike, catering to knuckleheads. Who are, sadly, the majority, and hence the low rating for this movie.

Another excellent, original Sci-Fi movie of recent was Eden Log, also very underrated.

In the 70s there were many more Sci-Fi movies with an original, groundbreaking and courageous idea (The Andromeda Strain, Logan's Run, 2001, Genesis II, Zardoz etc.) but those days are long gone. The "public" just wants to watch their zombie movie or space opera (nothing more than a western in pajamas with special effects). Nothing too far from the beaten path, nothing too far from the beer-drenched comfort zone.

What are your favorite, intelligent and original Sci-Fi movies?

Actually I love the original Russian 'Solaris', but I thought the remake was terrible. And I am a big fan of Soderberg and Cloony.

I have to check out Primer, never seen it yet.
