Is this a joke?

I just saw the trailer and I can't tell if this is a comedy that's making fun of those stupid cliché movies about acceptance or whatever or if this in fact one of those stupid cliché movies.

That's recap: good looking rich white guy with hot girlfriend is popular athlete. Poor lonely black kid brings gun to school, kills himself. Poor lonely Asian boy is a "loser" and appears to be an outcast for no other reason besides the fact that he is Asian. Rich white popular boy sees error of his ways and goes on a quest to befriend Asian boy for no other reason then to make himself feel better. Rich white friends detest this idea of acceptance but most of them eventually come around. This film is just one big cliché after another.

I thought you were exaggerating on the cliché's, but you weren't.

Although i did laugh at the trailer I think that they are serious.

I laughed at blonde boy's stare. You can almost here him say, "Okay now ACT! But whatever you do, DO NOT look at the camera."

I hope the actor in real life is not that naive looking, or he'll end up a victim of someone's casting couch.

And was Asian boy wearing a hooded cape to the party or was that just me?

I saw the trailer before Avatar. The movie looks really good, so i will probably go see it in the theater when it comes out.

How about this:

Good looking rich black guy with hot girlfriend is popular athlete. Poor lonely asian kid brings gun to school, kills himself. Poor lonely white boy is a "loser" and appears to be an outcast for no other reason besides the fact that he is white. Rich black popular boy sees error of his ways and goes on a quest to befriend white boy for no other reason then to make himself feel better. Rich black friends detest this idea of acceptance but most of them eventually come around.

Is that better, the way I changed it? What do colors have to do with anything? People would have trouble with my revised plot above, also and can make cliches about it.

It was a great message. I recommend it.

trust me - i thought the same thing. almost wrote it off. saw it tonight. one thing you should know though - its a movie made by a church. therefore, it's a Christian movie. based on that - accept it or reject it. but know - its not what you think. the black dude is actually a hero - a tragic one - and the white kid needs the help...

Unfortunately we still live in a society where racism occurs (I'm not calling this a racist movie so don't jump down my throat for that), but I do think that because racism is still an issue, even though it's not as in your face as it was a few decades ago, it's a lot easier to use minorities to try to strengthen your point. Look at how many movies are out there where a poor black man is the thief, murderer, kidnapper, or whatever. It's easier to see that than a rich white man because of the unfortunate stereotype that we constantly see depicted in the media. I'm not saying that this is right, but it happens a lot more than it should.

I think the comment by the OP might be more of a joke than the movie is. It is--in fact--a fantastic movie with an important message. I think, perhaps, OP hadn't seen it before beginning this thread.
The array of genetically inspired skin colors of the actors portraying these fictional characters lends only to enhance the message of God and Christ: All people stand on level ground at the foot of the cross. It seems to me that our nation's tendency to throw out the race complaint when discussing movies is getting a bit ridiculous. Who cares what color someone is? God loves us for our attitudes and actions. He--the designer of our skin color--does not care WHAT skin color is chosen by our DNA coding. People of every color act in an ugly manner. People of every color act in a beautiful manner. Nit picking on that particular issue in a movie like this one seems like it is just borrowing trouble. Watch it for yourself--actually WATCH it--and see if you can't figure out what the REAL message is. It is clear you haven't understood it yet.

Just some food for thought,
Peace, Y'all!

I don't need to see a movie to learn that racism is bad. In fact, I don't need a movie to tell me anything is good or bad because I am over the age of 4 and already know the difference between right and wrong.

Any lesson or message this film has to offer is something that I am already aware of.

My problem with this movie is not that I think it is racist, it's that I think the characters are incredibly stereotypical.

Watch it. :)
After that you can say if or if not you learned something from the movie. Have a great day! :)

reply

Yes watch it. It doesn't feel stereotypical at all
