Enjoyed this film but ...

why wasn't the main character on SSDI? He would not have to be in an assisted living situation and he would have cheap rent in a decent apartment and food stamps as well, plus money for the month. Just wondering.

I agree.

From my experiences working with people in this type of crisis mode, I can tell you that there are many, many people that are eligible to receive SNAP & SSDI, but that will refuse to apply for it. There is too much stigma attached to receiving government assistance. It is easier to convince them to apply if they have young children, "Think of your child(ren)." o.m.

SSDI comes from Social Security disability trust fund and differs from SSI which is basically state welfare. Neither one pays enough for the very young to live independently.

In the case of SSDI it depends if you worked enough quarters to qualify. For lower wage people it could be as low as $700 a month. Public housing is mostly limited to people with families not singles but even if one manages to get into one of the free rent apartments that is still not enough to live on when you consider electricity and other costs.

I've met many people on the lower end of SSDI and it's very hard on them to live on less that $1200 a month even in smaller rural towns. Plus the difficulty of finding truly accessible housing for the mobility impaired is another stumbling block.

The best thing for them is to get educated either in a trade or a college diploma and finding employment they can handle. Else they are destined for lifelong poverty. State disability agencies does pay all costs for education. Unfortunately few folks take advantage of these programs.

Assisted living facilities can be a good alternative and many of them are not too bad. Some using older motels where you are pretty much on your own except for food and other assistance if you need it. Others are too restrictive and/or located in areas not accessible to public transportation.
