Setting of the movie

How did they choose Sikeston, Missouri as the setting for this and Love Finds A Home? I just thought it was strange for them to pick that town. I live not far from there, and think it is kinda cool that they picked it, but the books never mention a place besides Boston/East Coast. So, I'm curious as to why the chose Sikeston?
