lucys mum was so cold to her

lucys mum had an irish accent. abortions are illegal in ireland so im guessing she had to have her so then just didnt look after her at all. the should legalise abortions in ireland.

Cold, but then she breaks down and hugs her for a long time. Is the mom an addict or mentally ill? If she doesn't mind the responsibility of a cat you'd figure she might as well take the daughter.

I thought Lucy might have reminded her of the father, or of how the father wasn't taking care and she would be stuck entirely with it, putting Lucy in the middle of the parents' issues with each other.

The impression I got was she didn't want Lucy in the first place, and has feelings of animosity towards Lucy for having a negative impact on her life, which is why she forces her away from her home/life. But then she hugs her and doesn't want to see her leave, because ultimately it's her daughter and would naturally have strong maternal feelings towards her. Very interesting to see that schizophrenic behaviour from her mother, and there are a lot of different ways to interpret that. Awesome film!

The scene at the diner lead me to believe that Lucy's mother loved and wanted her dad, but didn't want Lucy. It's like the typical role we see was reversed and she was just a deadbeat mom. I was confused when she was saying "How is your other daughter?" But at the same time the dad was saying that Lucy needs to hear that her mom loves her.
