Fat suits just aren't funny.

...though i have to admit that, after the second episode, the tubby hockey
player character DID get a bit more appealing with his back story, but still...
Fat Suits are kind of like the anti-monkey. If you include them in your movie
the odds are good that it actually makes things LESS funny..

Still, the show has had just enough laughs so far to keep me watching.

You're an idiot. who cares about the fat suit? it isn't a main focus point. without it he'd just be a normal sized dude sitting on his couch 24 hours a day. which wouldn't make any sense. its not the nutty professor.

reply

I have to admit, when I saw the fat suit, I immediately thought "they've sunk to this?" But now that it's at the fourth episode, I'm really liking Ricky's character.

reply

I don't even care about the fat suit, I just love the freckles…they're adorable.

You know, Wobbles...I'm kinda mad at you.

reply

A fat suit for the sake of having a fat suit isn't funny. That said, the Ricky's morbid obesity is very much in integral element of the character and as such the only alternative is hiring someone who is actually that big and that doesn't jibe with what the Kids in the Hall do.

As far as I'm concerned it's every bit as essential as the drag. That too can be done for a cheap laugh and 20+ years later you'd be stupid to write off the drag in the same way.

I'm also reminded of their use of blackface. Now, I can't really defend the use of blackface on Mississippi Gary as that wasn't necessary and the character was actually funnier later when they dropped it but I think that sketch where Dave Foley's college student character brings Scott Thompson's black boyfriend character home to meet her parents as proof that the basic concept itself isn't fundamentally tied to the hateful and disgusting portrayals usually associated with blackface.

reply

Dave is amazing in that sketch.

reply

How in the world do you guys consider using a certain costume (a fat suit) to be somethign one would have to 'sink to'?

They didn't use it as a cheap gag... Like someone said, the character is fat not for humor, but for the purpose of his story and character development... it's like saying "I can't believe they 'sunk to' wearing fake mustaches... or 'sunk to' dressing up in drag to play women!"

I guess I'm not seeing the distinction you guys are making.

reply

I agree. We're past the days where obesity is poked fun at. Not funny.

reply

Are you kidding?? How was it NOT funny when ricky lost enough wieght to fit into his 'outside' fat pants?? That incidentally would fit four normal people.

Sorry, people that fat deserve to be made fun of, as well as the people who enable them, and not tell them to get their a$$ off the couch and get their own damn pizza.

People who are that unhealthy by choice deserve no quarter. And I am not talking about people who are fat because of genes and it is hard for them to loose that extra 30, I am talkin FAT fat people.

And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

To quote my favorite teacher, Mr. Hand..."What are you people? ON DOPE??"

Fat suits are hilarious! I wish I had one. These lazy, obese slobs of today NEED to be poked fun of!

Besides, you could say the same argument that men dressed as women "just isn't funny." It's a schtick that's as old as comedy itself. Even the 3 Stooges did it. But it's what you do while in drag that counts, and Kids in the Hall are masters! Same goes with the fat suit.

You guys obviously haven't seen Eddie Murphy in "Fat Suit". This Christmas.

reply

aBsolutely fat suits aren't funny. But the character of Ricky was indeen funny, and not because he was in a fat suit. The character had more than that one fat dimension

reply

I agree in the sense that I wish it weren't so poorly done in this series. I don't mind a character in a fat suit as long as you can't immediately and constantly tell it's a fat suit.

I was wondering if it was part of the joke that Ricky's phony stuffing is often so obvious, but it's so distracting from the dialogue that it simply can't be intentional. The crappy fat suit is by far my least favorite aspect of this otherwise funny and entertaining series.

Yet dressing drag is OK as long as you can't immediately tell they are a man? Or does your 'logic' only apply to a certain type of costume?

That being said I'd like you to point me towards a 'fat suit' you've seen used on cable TV that didn't immediately and constantly look like a fat suit.

Man, you people are freaking picky!

reply

And you are freaking defensive. Were you a part of the crew that created it?

Fat suits I've seen that were convincing are the ones in Eddie Murphy's Nutty Professor movies, and the one Tyra wore out on the streets. The one on this show is the worst one I have seen in the past decade or so in a professional production. Sorry you don't agree.

reply

as others have said your an idiot. enough said

Haha, so funny to stumble onto a post I made over 2 years ago.

I think I made other posts about this show as it aired, as well, but this is the
one that somehow got the most comments!

At any rate, the fat suit was still pretty lame, but overall i wound
up enjoying the series.
