How can never before seen marker be holy?

I just don't understand that part, how can the marker found on a planet never before explored by man (or so they think) be considered such a holy object? Why is it important to a religion if they've never seen it before? Did they know it's a copy of one found on earth and they think it's just as scared as the one they found? I think this is like the biggest plot hole/issue with this whole story.

-spoilers-

In the Novel (which takes place BEFORE this movie and the games on Earth... long before Planet Cracking was even looked at.) they discovered the original marker on Earth in a crater.

The main character in the story? Altman. Recall how all the Unitologists seem to say, "Altman be praised" and "Praise Altman"?

Well, when they discovered the original marker on Earth, Altman tries to tell the public about it when the government tries to cover up the discovery. This starts a bunch of conspiracy theories, and eventually the baddies in the book confirm that it's true. This starts the Religion of Unitology. They believe the Marker created us and not God, and that it will lead us to greater glory.

In the end, to cement the religion. The baddies capture Altman and kill him off with a Necromorph. Of course, they cover up his death, and make him a Martyr. Which solidifies the Religion into place and causes it to spread faster then ever.

Thus, that is why the Marker is so important to them. Now, I can't quite recall if the Marker you find on Aegis 7 is man made or not... but I think it is man made, as it was used to repel Necromorphs.

Yeah the marker on Aegis 7 is a replica placed there by the government.

You can ask the exact same question about real religions: how can a never before seen god be holy? Answer: people are stupid and gullible.
