Frank N Furter... Sweet Transvestite?

My issue with the casting is the fact that Lavern Cox is a woman!

Frank N Furter is supposed to be a Sweet Transvestite from Transexual, Transylvania. Lavern's Franky is a Woman wearing sexy women lingerie, not a male transvestite in womens underwear.

To me Lavern Cox is a Woman, so the title of Transvestite FROM planet Transsexual, in the distant galaxy of Transylvania makes absolutely no sense what so ever.

Your opinions on this are this are welcome, but this is mine!

reply

They constantly referred to frank as she. This bothered me to no end and ruined the film

reply

Indeed. She's obviously a talented performer, but she just doesn't make any sense as Frank. A woman dressed in women's clothing isn't a transvestite, so what is the deal? The whole point of Frank is that he is a man who, in spite of wearing women's lingerie, oozes with puzzlingly masculine sexual energy. And feminine. He's a bit of a riddle.

Laverne's Frank is a woman who is like the mad scientist version of Grace Jones or Tina Turner. Which is a fine thing to be, perhaps even a bit of a riddle, but it's not a transvestite thing at all.

I am the sod-off shotgun.

reply

Absolutely right! That was one of the reasons I refused to watch this!

reply

This may be wrong but I am just seeing Lavern as an actress. So it may seem it is a woman wearing woman lingerie, but i see her a transgender playing a part of being a man wearing woman lingerie. I do not know, but that is how I am perceiving it.
I just like to say Adam Lambert did a wonderful job and I appreciated the new Rocky and how he played the role was awesome.

Really the only reason I possibly did not like the redo was the new version of Magenta and how Riff Raff did not have enough time to appreciate him and usually stuck with Magenta and I think it ruined his character.

reply

TBH, Lambert probably would have made a better Frank than Cox did.

If I wanted an avatar, I'd have had one by now.

reply

Who cast this picture? A female Dr. Franknfurter? Although Cox was trying her best to be fresh and keep Curry in mind she was terribly miscast.
Riff Raff was believable but they all had mighty big shoes to fill.

reply

I know. If they had dressed Cox in dandy-ish men's clothing, it would have made more sense... and would have been a neat twist on the original.

If I wanted an avatar, I'd have had one by now.

reply

you guys are all pretty stupid...Lavern Cox is a transgender....now stfu

reply

No one is stupid. Everyone knows Lavern Cox is transgender.

The issue is Frank N. Furter wasn't a transgender. He was a transvestite.
There's a huge difference between the two. The part doesn't work when the
character is female. There's nothing shocking about seeing a woman dressed
like a woman. If you don't understand that then you don't understand the
whole point of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. You just can't swap roles
and expect it to work with the dialog. Many times throughout the "tribute"
Lavern Cox's version of Frank N. Furter is referred to as a "he" and "she".
This doesn't fit with what a Transvestite is. Therefore, casting Lavern
Cox for the part was wrong and took away everything that makes it fun and
interesting.

reply

she was the best part of the movie she was a man and still has strong manly features. if you want to find a problem with this movie then look no further then the horrible Lip Sync
issues.

reply

Well said adamgenesiseden, that is exactly my issue, it's a shame that others don't get this, transgender is completely different to transvestite, true the word transexual is used in the musical... but it's the name of the planet not what frank N. Furter is.

reply

Frank as a woman isnt a new concept...the TV show GLEE did it back in 2011
