Mom would be a lot older. If she was a teenager in the early 80's she would in her mid 50's by now. Why is Alicia Silverstone playing this character?

1980's nostalgia reached it's peak in the late 2000's. A Valley Girl remake/musical would have worked in ''2005''.

The ''valley girl's'' conversation on the beach about marriage and fear of being independent/not wanting to work. I know this was set in 1980's USA but every girl back then would have heard of Margaret Thatcher (first female British prime minister) that inspired a lot of women to want to join the workforce back then (from what I hear). Why is this film portraying teenage girls with a 1950's mentality?
