The University Biochemistry Student.....

Can't remember his name, but were he and Mimi supposed to be romantically involved? Or maybe they were just good friends, nothing more? Perhaps he was just someone she could talk to, a companion after her husband died, and after John left to basically live with his mother and her family for awhile? He just seemed to show up out of the blue (he came to Mimi's door one day and it wasn't clear to me why!) and all of a sudden he was around a lot, at the birthday party Mimi had for John, etc. Anyone know if this person existed in real life? From what I know of Mimi and from how she is portrayed in the film as well, she doesn't strike me as someone who would have had a romantic relationship with a younger man, but I really don't know.....

After George died, Mimi would have found it hard to pay the bills so she started to take in lodgers (students mostly). I am not sure if this particular man existed in "real life" but there were definitely student lodgers living at Mendips for quite some time.

Ah ok, thanks for the info.! Like I said the movie did not do a very good job of explaining why he was there and why he was always around. That explains it!

I've seen it mentioned somewhere that she had an affair with a student named Fishwick and even contemplated leaving John to go to New Zealand with him.

His presence was a surprise, and it oddly reminded me of the lodger young Alex found, after he got out of jail - the 'new son', in Clockwork Orange.

In the same scene Mimi responded in a strange way when the lodger said that he was a student of biochemistry. Any ideas?

Philip Norman writes that Mimi had an affair with a 19 year old named Fishwick.Apparently, she was still a virgin at 50!
