Season 1 was not very good, not very funny, cringe worthy at times. This show, like the Office, had to figure things out before it became funny.
But, what exactly was different about season 1 compared to the rest? I noticed Leslie tries to be stupid like Michael Scott, where in further seasons she is smart, but overreaches and seems to get in over her head, which is funny.
I gave up on this show the first time it came out because not only was Leslie stupid but totally unlikable. I tried it again after hearing it got better and noticed this was the major change.
Leslie became more a character to root for in her love for her community and they left the more major eccentricities for the supporting characters. I think that worked better.
She becomes more driven, accomplished, and appreciated by her peers and staff. In the first she's kinda of an delusional idiot, even admitting to being taken advantage of easily by the guys she likes
