Review of Zift

http://cinestrata.com/wordpress/2008/10/fnc08-review-zift/

There have been a few negative comments on IMDb, especially from Bulgarian users, about this film. It certainly does not push the medium forward in any way, but is an excellent genre film IMO. My review of its screening at a Montreal film festival is above.

I have 2 questions:

1. What nationality are you?
2. When was this Montreal Screening if you know the exact date I can input the information in the Release date section ( Ive been doing most of the release dates for Zift anyway.)

reply

Born in Montreal of Western European descent.

The Montreal screening of Zift was back on October 17th, 2008. The film festival was Festival du Nouveau Cinema (New Cinema Film Festival). (Source: http://www.nouveaucinema.ca/)

After this movie I got one comment:

Yuck, yuck, yuck.

I'm too lazy to write a whole review, so let me give you a short 'n sweet breakdown of the film's elements:

camera: very good, but nothing you haven't seen in Guy Ritchie movies

editing: very good, but nothing you haven't seen in Guy Ritchie movies

screenplay: awful & very derivative

acting: mostly fake (typical with 90% of Bulgarian screen actors)

dialogue: idiotic, yet way too pretentious and "deep", completely fake (no one in reality actually talks like this; also typical of most BG films)

humor: toilet humor, funny if you're under 14 years old or if you really enjoy the American Pie trilogy.

This film was touted by all BG media, and most disappointingly by the esteemed "magazine 1", as the greatest example of the new reinvigorated BG cinema, which is most definitely not the case. You're better off watching Snatch again, at least it won't insult your IQ and the plot is more or less the same.

And finally, here's a tip for aspiring Bulgarian directors: make sure you have a good script, written by someone actually living in the real world; hire unprofessional actors or just pick people off the streets who watch a lot of movies, they'll do a more convincing job than the ones who have "studied" acting in Bulgaria. And finally (this goes for the authors too): please grow up and don't do toilet humor, there are lots of other metaphors and devices you can use to get your point across.
