now don't get me wrong. I liked this movie and I do really like Jeff Bridges, all the way back to Tron, but his characters are very similar. Hell, for the difference between movies, there are similarities between this character and "the dude".

Yes his characters are all similar and probably very close to what he is like. But in this movie at came together better than usual.

This. Plus, there was something oddly sexy about Jeff Bridges as Bad Blake...well, when he wasn't puking, drunk or chain-smoking!
I loved him as a country-music performer, and he has a great voice for it as well!

Ha Ha look at me spelling like an idiot,so what am I to say... But anyway IDIOTIC! and if that's not right oh well! You No what I was trying to say.

reply

I thought that Jeff Bridges was good in Crazy Heart. I have Crazy Heart on DVD and Blu-Ray

reply

That may be true, but you've got to understand in the context of the movie it would be VERY easy to overact the character of Bad Blake. Jeff Bridges was able to hit all the right notes and make the audience feel like he actually WAS Bad Blake. Sometimes it's not so much about what an actor does, as it is about what he (or she) DOESN'T do.

I was pleasantly surprised by Jeff's performance. He was amazing. All actors have mannerisms, ticks, and expressions that follow from performance to performance. Jack Nicholson is an obvious case in point. Meryl Streep tends to look side-ways when she smiles and roles her eyes a lot. All great actors though. Jeff's performance was so good, that I lost myself in the story and didn't see him as Jeff Bridges acting a character but Bad Blake himself. He definitely deserved his awards.

...my thoughts tend to come out in little spurts that don't necessarily connect. If you wait long enough, you will find the linear path.

Jeff Bridges is always That good! He is one of the most solid actors of the last 35 years. I don't think I have ever seen him in a film where he wasn't good (even if the film was bad). Check him out in "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" (1975) alongside Clint Eastwood.

There were subtle differences to his personality but they were there. Thats what good acting is really. You grow to know the character in the movie and it shouldnt be such a drastic change. I bet if you watch The Big Lebowski for example, and then remember a scene from Crazy Heart, you will see the difference. Besides I think he focused on other things in his acting, like being convincing as a has-been country music singer who's an alcoholic, and not so much on totally transforming into another human being. Most actors are like that, they still look and sound the same.. some even have the exact same personality in general, but they use their skills of convincing the audience they're really going through what their character is going through. Lots of people say Mickey Rourke was being himself in The Wrestler, and he probably was, because he must have found it easier to breathe life into his character when he's comfortable as himself. I see no problem with that because it added authenticity to his performance. Just cos u behave like yourself doesnt mean u hang around on set all day just reading lines because its easier that way.. lol

A.... that was great yes, But this was as much, and what does that have to do with anything anyway Mark?

reply

After just seeing this movie for the first time I was pleasantly surprised. Being an Oscar winning role I expected a lot of blow up, explosive, Oscar baiting moments. There were none. It's an understated performance. But it is nice to see a non show-offy performance win. He brings a real gentleness and hint of vulnerability to a character we could (and maybe should) dislike.

What other movies are these where he acts the same? I can't recall any of them.

Ironman? Seabiscuit? KPax? The Contender? Just to name a few of his more famous movies of the last decade

We must have watched a different movie. I thought Bridges was almost unrecognizable he melded into Bad Blake so thoroughly. Watch The Big Lebowski again (like any needs a reason to do that). There is nothing similar between that character and Bad Blake.

Both amazing performances, and the two crowning achievements in a fine, fine career.

reply

Jeff Bridges is almost always good, so I didn't think his character stood out much.

reply

He was solid, but didn't deserve the Oscar IMO.

reply

The oscar was more for his body of work.

Yes he did, He got it didn't He? that says something doesn't it?

Um.... Seriously? like what, most agree this is probably his best. Yes, it was surly oscar worthy! That's why he got it.

Jeff Bridges was excellent in this movie. With that being said, he also performed music and sang songs. Musicals and movies featuring musicians are always rewarded from the academy. Some examples would include Reese Witherspoon for her portrayal of June Carter and Jennifer Hudson for Dreamgirls.

Watch The Big Lebowski, Crazy Heart and True Grit. All drunk characters all different. That show what a great actor he is and Crazy Heart is indeed his best and most realist drunk. Great subtle performance. The film too subtle for my liking but good.
