Kris Kristofferson?

This movie sounds like it was inspired by his career. Does anyone know if that's the case?

He even looks like him in this movie.

reply

He also reminded me of Waylon Jennings.

I just watched the movie, and came here to read what others had to say, so I hope I'm not saying whats already been said. Bad Blake is a fictitious character but he is based on 3 Country Legends,Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. They wanted it to be Merle's story but couldn't get the rights from the family. I noticed when the movie opened, Jeff was in a Merle character, then went into Waylon and finished with Kris. I was very impressed not only with Jeff's outstanding acting ability in bringing his character to life but the way he nailed each one of these men's mannerisms. Someone did an awesome job on this movie in bringing each one of these guys back to life. Having grown up in Country Music, Jeff did a great job with the accent. I can't say the same for Colin, he was a miscast in my opinion. I agree the character he most resembled is Kris.

reply

More and more through the movie he was reminding me of Kris Kristofferson

reply

Except that Waylon, Kris and Hag were/are all rich and famous even in their 60s. They never had to play bowling alleys for beer money, but there are some old-timers out there who do.

reply

I think Kris Kristofferson said of the resemblance: "I didn't see any resemblance. The guy was a loser, you know. I've got eight kids, a lovely wife, am sober and all is good career wise."

I think Jeff wasn't playing Kris, but he stole some Kris for the authenticity. I think Kris is a pretty tough and rough guy, not afraid to fight. So I don't really see the connection between Colin Farrell's character and Kristofferson. Kris actually went into movies before he made it REALLY BIG as a singer, so I think this was more of a Billy Ray or Toby Keith kind of thing.

Yeah, I agree with John Russell. I read an article about KK in Rolling Stone about a year ago and was amazed. KK was a stud in the 60's and 70's, a green beret, a college vet, and had the looks of any of the big stars of Hollywood. I think this story better resembles the careers of Waylon and Merle. I would have died if they had been able to make a movie about Merle, as he's been my favorite country singer since I could talk (I'm only 29, and listen mainly to rock and punk music).

No matter what though, I thought the movie was great. I just finished watching it for a second time, and did it this time with the captions at the bottem of the screen because my pops has a hard time hearing, and a lot of Bad's lines are even funnier and more insightful. Plus, having already been a huge Jeff Bridges fan for most of his career, I thought this was a great role and easily his best, although the dude ranks up there very close.

Can't wait for True Grit to come up. Bridges, with the Coen brothers directing, alongside a classic story, is almost too much to wait for.

KK's first big claim to fame was as a songwriter, and if they borrowed anything from KK for this movie, it would be that.

"My name is Gladiator"

David Allen Coe comes to mind; he continues to play any place that will accomodate him.

reply

the character was based on Hank Thompson, at least the book was.

Kris Kristofferson was a Rhoades Scholar, a helicopter pilot in Viet Nam, a successful actor and an ultra successful songwriter. There isn't even a slight similarity between these two (other than he looks a bit like him).

People don't understand how fantastic Jeff Bridges is in this role. Everything about his performance is flawless. The nuances make the role, its unfortunate that you have to put on alien makeup and blow up seven buildings in a role to make simpletons appreciate your acting ability.

reply

I agree, Boyle.

In the first concert scene after he sobers up it struck me who he reminded me of the most...the late, great and much lamented Townes van Zandt.

reply

I agree, PurpleProse. The Texan Townes Van Zandt was definitely the person that came to mind -- the drinking, multiple wives, estranged children, and tragically great talent for songwriting. Townes wrote the Willie Nelson hit "Pancho and Lefty." As all the musicians he inspired moved on to greater fame, he declined into obscurity. This film is a bit happier than Townes' life. I guess that maybe it's a common trope in the annals of authentic country music.

reply

Resembles Kris but hes with out a doubt playing Townes Van Zandt.
not even a question...

....the book is about Hank Thompson...

When he was begging Jean to take him back, his voice sounded so much like Kris and every so often throughout the movie, I heard Kris. Physically, and the way he stood on stage, his mannerisms while singing on stage, specially when he had his hat on and glasses reminded me of Waylon Jennings. If he had black hair, he'd have been a dead ringer for Waylon, but when he spoke that was Kris. When he was showing the boy how to kick a piece of paper, now there was Jeff with a beard.

Here's a clue: a couple weeks ago I was at the Bridge School Benefit, which is a charity event Neil Young does every year up here in the SF area. Among the performers that evening was a revue put together by T. Bone Burnett (who produced this movie "Crazy Heart") which featured Jeff Bridges singing 2 songs from this film. Earlier in the day, one of the featured performers was Kris Kristofferson. Coincidence? Maybe. But to further confuse things, they also had Leon Russell performing with Burnett's band... so maybe "Bad" is Leon Russell? I think he's partly Russell, partly Kristofferson, part of a lot of people over a lot of years.

Did I not love him, Cooch? MY OWN FLESH I DIDN'T LOVE BETTER!!! But he had to say 'Nooooooooo'

If I hadn't seen this thread here, I would have started one about how much Bridges looked like Kristofferson in this movie. I was thinking though that this is most likely not at all the kind of guy Kristofferson was/is. I was also wondering why hasn't a country singer who can also act, like Kristofferson can, ever done something like this? He's never been as good as Bridges, but he could have done a credible job.

reply

Bridges looks like Kris...no question. When my mom brought this movie over I thought for a split second ...hey that's Kris! I really did not recognize Bridges in the beginning.

As far as who's story it is...it could be one of many. My post is just to say he looked like Kris in the movie, at least part of the time.
