Why Juliane Hough?

I love Diablo Cody. I love Juno. I LOVE Young Adult. I was hoping for this to be Young Adult quality. But Young Adult had a tremendous lead actress in Charlize Theron. I have yet to see any display of talent from Juliane Hough apart from getting rich boyfriends.

I wondered why Diablo would cast her in her directorial debut. Maybe she had a tremendous audition and the girl is actually overflowing with acting talent that has only been over shadowed by her tabloid presence and annoyingly average/pedestrian/standard/template persona and looks.

THEN it occurred to me. Diablo is friends with a lot of people at E! Her husband works on Chelsea Lately. Diablo is entrenched with all those people. Ryan Seacrest is the most influential individual on that network. He was dating Julianne Hough when she was cast in this film. Perhaps he used his influence to 'make'/'persuade'/convince/cajole/barter Diablo into casting Julianne as the lead.

Honestly, I love Julianne. Don't know her, never will, but she seems like a good person. When it comes to acting, I wouldn't say she's the best. However (and this is a big however), out of everything she's been in that I've seen, it is in this movie that she does her BEST acting. She inhabited Lamb very well and outside of a few squeaky moments, she did a very fine job. That said, we all have opinions.

Lol, but I simply can't agree when you insinuate that Julianne lacks any display of talent "apart from getting rich boyfriends." Have you seen her dance on Dancing With The Stars where she was a professional ballroom teacher? Man, she's untouchable! She won the championship titles two seasons in a row. She did eventually leave to pursue other things, but she is OVERFLOWING with talent. I still don't understand how Seacrest wooed her over.

I can truthfully say that I came into this with a completely blank slate re: Julianne. Her name sounded vaguely familiar but I had no recollection of seeing her in anything (the only time I would have seen her was in Burlesque, which I only watched long enough to confirm that Cher and Aguilera were as awful as I expected, and Hough's performance did not register with me at all).

But I have to admit that I was fairly blown away by Hough's performance in Paradise. If she were some unknown actress making her debut, I think people would see her as someone with a lot of potential (not necessarily as a technically gifted or versatile actress, but as someone who could connect with audiences with her earnestness and vulnerability).

After the movie I looked for more info on her and unfortunately, this girl's got a lot of baggage image-wise. Some people will want to see her for reasons unrelated to her potential as an actress and just as many will be ready to hate her no matter what she does. Hopefully she can get past all this because like I said, I think she has some real potential.

Also loved her singing of Milky White Way, which can be found on youtube.

I completely agree with you fmpol. Had she been some unknown, her performance would have been praised. Sadly, the fact that she is well-known for being the dancer who attempted to become an actress, people are going to judge her way too harshly.

Hail to the king, baby.

Juliane is EXACTLY the right person for this role. Raised mormon, in Utah. Her life was somewhat sheltered and structured. And she has turned to the wild side, some. (But Seacrest? Really? What are we missing...)
I'm sure Charlize could play Lamb, but she wouldn't have the background. And we wouldn't go in thinking of her as coming from a religious cult.

This was an odd movie, and we enjoyed it. It's the first movie I've seen JF in, and thought she was good in it. The best actor, really. Holly Hunter didn't do much. Russel Brand was good, as usual.

Charlize is much too old to play Lamb. Lamb is supposed to be early to mid-20s, isn't she? Late 20s at most?

Hail to the king, baby.
