Right Into the Crapper

And it's a shame, too. I like Russell Brand, Holly Hunter, Nick Offerman (of course!), Octavia Spencer, and I have an enormous crush on Kathleen Rose Perkins. Can't stand the Hough woman, nor do I like Diablo Cody's work. Boo! Anyway, too bad for the great (mostly) cast. As of this writing, the movie has a ranking of 3.7 here on IMDb. That's VERY poor.

If you dislike Diablo Cody's work, you were destined to dislike the movie. You seemingly watched it just so you could write a wannabe-scathing review of it.

You must not have a dictionary handy. Go online and find the definition for "scathing". You may as well look up "review" as well, because my op is neither scathing nor even a review. When you have a grip on your vocabulary, you can come back and talk to the adults...okay? Okay.

Scathing... Defined as "severely critical." You were quite critical of the film in your post.. Your post reviewed the things in the film you didn't like, thus it can be referred to as a review of sorts. My words still stand, my friend.

Hail to the king, baby.

Hear that? That's the sound of me ignoring you.

You were the one with an attitude, friend.

Not necessarily true. I'm usually unimpressed with Kevin Costner's acting and Ashton Kutcher annoys me greatly. But I saw them both in The Guardian and was impressed with both of their performances.

However, I might be a little more opened minded than some others. For example, if I ever saw Nicholas Cage give an impressive performance I'd say so. Actually, I'd probably have a heart attack & die from utter shock. But, barring that, I'd admit that I was impressed.

In the same way, if Will Ferrell ever says or does anything funny, well, the world would come to and end, wouldn't it? But still, if that ever happened, and we were all still here the next day, I'd admit that it was funny.

But that's just me.

Indeed, I would always give credit where I believed it was due. I try not to hold grudges. If an actor I previously disliked gave what I thought was a great performance in something, I would definitely say so.

I agree. While I enjoyed some of Cody's work in the past (e.g. Juno), Paradise did nothing for me. I found it to be a huge disappointment with its poor script and direction - it felt very pedestrian and anti-climatic. I was very disappointed as I expected more from Cody and the cast.

I thought Juno was okay, but previous to that film, and definitely after, there was mostly hype about Cody. She had gained her initial fame by writing about having worked as a stripper. And despite Juno supposedly having several autobiographical elements, I thought Juno's character was fairly unbelievable. It would be a rare thing to find a teenager so self-assured. She seemed totally contrived and an obvious fiction.

I did give United States of Tara a try, but gave up on that fairly quickly, and for similar reasons. Even with one's suspension of disbelief, I found it difficult to accept that Tara's "illness" would manifest itself in the ways it did in her life.

And so with Paradise I was hoping the awesome cast would bring in something I'd enjoy, and that Cody may have gained some experience as a writer for the screen. Again I was disappointed. But if I had liked it, and thought her writing and directing skills were some of the reasons WHY I liked it, I would not have hesitated to say so.
