I know he gets a lot of shit for Death Note and Blair Witch but to be fair, both projects were essentially impossible to live up to. Besides the film, prior to filming, the whole whitewashing controversy started. The Blair Witch Project cannot get a good sequel as the first one worked with the really creative marketing that people thought it was actually real. A sequel through the Hollywood machine would never work the way this film did.

With that said, Wingard's films like You're Next, The Guest, V/H/S show that he knows the genre really well and his movies have a sort of tongue-in-cheek feel in them. I feel like he would be a fine successor to what Wes Craven did while also not doing an imitation. I was against a Scream 5 without Craven until learning he was considering a Scream 5 but it was hell doing Scream 4 that he backed off doing more. I think, if Wingard worked with Kevin Williamson, we can really get something special.
