Answering machines in 2011??

One thing that really bothered me about TAKE ME HOME, a movie seemingly set in 2011, is how tech (in particular communications) seemed to be set in 2001. All the messages being left on home phone and even office phone answering machines seemed very strange. Why would Claire's mom not call her cell phone and leave voice mail? Why would Claire buy an atlas and not use Google maps on her smart phone? I can understand Thom's old flip phone because he was broke, but only that.

Anyone else notice this?

I think Claire's phone died or she had it off or something, I wouldn't think she would have brought a charger since she left on a whim. Plus she probably lost it when she lost her purse.

And people do still use answering machines lol. It's becoming more and more obsolete but my parents still have one and offices for sure use them...

True. I'm writing in July 2016 and I still have a few Luddite friends that just refuse to get with the program. Still use land lines and answering machines.

...but dozing off at the wheel and driving into the desert so far they couldn't find the highway WAS believable? Or leaving her purse at a restaurant and not having access to ANY cash? There were holes all the way through it. Still a good movie and I enjoyed it, solid 7/10, but could have been better written.

On the subject of cell phones, its getting to the point where they should start using generic "movie-only" phones. Too often now you can date a movie just by the tech they are using. All these movies with people using iPhones are going to look pretty dumb years from now when everyone has moved onto next thing.
