Even a Documentary about Kobe comes off Fake

This is the underlying issue with Kobe and why he is so polarizing. Its not his cocky attitude (Jordan was 10 times worse) its not the trouble hes been in with the law (Allen Iverson is still a top selling jersey though he hasnt been important to the NBA in 5 years) its the fact that Kobe constantly comes off as FAKE. He has a fake laugh, it looks like he fakes being a tough guy, he tries to fake himself into being MJ and in this movie he was a fake teammate and player for a day. Thats what it looked like to me anyhow.

The fact that Kobe was well aware that entire day that cameras were on him make me question alot of his actions as being authentic because it seems those around him seem constantly surprised by how hes behaving. From his polite teachings and ultra leader qualities on the bench during this game (Seriously watch Jordan Farmar when Kobe starts calling out "Jordy" and giving him directions...its as if Jordan is a schoolgirl going "You DO know my name!")Speaking Italian to Sasha for no reason other than to show the cameras and mic on him that he can speak Italian. (I almost get the reason of speaking Italian during the game, but why when youre alone on the bench? Want to keep secrets from your teammates? Or is to show how cool it is you know Italian?) He didnt use alot of vulgarity on the court during this game when I can tell you first hand Kobe is more foul mouthed on the court than a port full of sailors. Also he had very light complaints to the refs, when I can tell you first hand Kobe usually is cussing out the refs nearly every play that doesnt end in him getting points.

His voiceover seemed like he was trying to be cool instead of just being cool (if that makes sense). In the locker room it shows him doing his fake Kobe laugh and playing around with some of his teammates and you can see them all looking around at each other like "When does Kobe talk to us?"

Not to mention everything was positive with Kobe. Oh he loves Manu, the Spurs are so good, Damon Staudamire is sick with that jumpshot....Refs do such a great job, Bowen grabbing him is fantastic.....Youre telling me not one thing pissed him off about this game? Not one? that doesnt feel very real to me.

This is the problem with Kobe. He can get a reality movie made about him, and still come off 100% Fake.

reply

Agree 100%. In fact however, I think you give him too much credit. You really think he knows Italian? I bet he asked before the game how to say a few words. I very highly doubt he is proficient enough to carry on a conversation in any language other than English. You really think he became proficient in a language becuase one of his teammates knows it? I bet when he said that most people in the locker room are mulit-lingual, he thought back to one occasion where a few of the guys asked how to say a swear word in another language or something. It all just seemed way too contrived and not real at all.

Know religion, no peace. No religion, know peace.

reply

I do know Kobe knows several languages, he grew up partly in Italy with his dad playing pro ball overseas. So one thing Ill say ISNT fake is his ability to speak Italian. I believe Kobe is a very very very very smart guy. Too smart if possible. If he wasnt an athlete he'd probably be a socially awkward overly smart guy, the kind we all know at least one of. Where no matter how hard he tries to fit in, he just isnt quite able to. Thats what Kobe reminds me of in the basketball world. No matter how much he wants to be the cool likeable superstar like Jordan was, he just doesnt have it. He fakes it.

reply

Its sad how Kobe gets under all your skin lol I've watch enough games at staples to say that he does play and leads his teammates the same way in the documentary. Its sad to bash a player for being anything but great, but i guess thats the type of basketball fans you guys are.
Sasha Vujacic played in Italy for a while and Kobe lived part of his youth in Italy so that explains why they speak Italian to each other.Kobe's even part owner of the Italian team his dad played for called Olimpia Milano.

Finally a voice of reason!

You pretty much answered your own issue here and resolved this "problem". First you said "it looks like he fakes...". That's all it is. Just because it appears that way to YOU, does not make it so. Second, Kobe has never had it easy since he's been in the league for it is not HIM who compares himself to MJ, it is the commentators and fans like yourself. Kobe has never been allowed to just be Kobe and it's unfortunate that he came in just as MJ was going out. The announcers did him a great disservice by forcing this comparison upon him. He did not ask for this. I'm not sure how you would have liked to see him behave, perhaps like a street thug from the ghetto, sorry to disappoint you. Finally, your last sentence is what sets you free. At least you had the courage to admit you are the one with the problem.

Here you go again, assuming that you know what this man was thinking throughout this "documentary". It's no surprise to ANYONE who follows not only Kobe but the Lakers team and in fact the NBA as a whole, that KB speaks fluent Italian. So your efforts to try and prove that he was "showing off" have failed. Some people watching this, who have never really known much about him, have learned something they did not know before. So, when DID you start going to all the Lakers games and at what point did you acquire all this "first-hand" knowledge about KB's on-court language faux pas? Perhaps it's the fact that he knew people from 3-103 would be watching this film and did not care to offend anyone. Oh, but it could never be something as thoughtful as that with you, KB always has to be "SHOWING OFF" somehow. Show me a player who does not cuss on the court and at the refs and I'll show you a $1000 dollar bill. Everyone knows this, so again, you have failed to paint a negative picture of him.

Again with the "seemed like". Admit you are jealous and you wish you were him because it certainly "seems" that way. See how stupid that sounds? Anyway the rest of your drivel is just too stupid to waste time responding to, so I will end with this. You don't know what is in another person's heart and never will, until you have walked a mile in their shoes, do not judge them because you don't know what experiences they have had in life. Don't ever look at someone and pretend to know what or who they are. But if you feel you need to do this, keep it to yourself and don't post it on a message board because it really makes YOU look envious.

reply

The original post is 100% on point. Nobody denies Kobe is an incredible basketball talent, but he comes off as someone simply is not likeable in the way that other titans of the game such as Jordan and Lebron are. He's more of an a-rod type persona.

Regarding the film itself, I'm as big of a Spike fan that you can get, but this thing was poorly done all the way around.

reply

kobe - stop posting under an alias and get back to practice

on a more serious note, your argument defending kobe against somebody's OPINION is pretty sad. it's even worse when the basis of your defense is that we don't know kobe's real heart and motivation... as if you do (and are therefore qualifed to object). all this really shows is you have a pretty thin skin for your choice in hero worship.

Having watched Kobe in person recently and MJ back in the day. Kobe is more talented than MJ but he’s not the player MJ was; and MJ was not that "flashy" or great a player in terms of raw talent. Kobe is coasting on his talent. He hasn’t been working out. It’s why he has all these injuries.

Most of MJ’s hype or the "idea" people have of him is because he won a couple dunk contests and Nike Ads. But not close to the reality of MJ.

I saw MJ play as a kid about 10 or so times in person and I saw him dunk maybe once or twice. That's it. Most of his points came from boring 15 foot jumpers. MJ wasn't as quick as Grant Hill, couldn't jump as high as Darvin Ham at 6’4’’ who could snag rebounds where head would be equal to the rim, wasn’t as fast as Clyde Drexler, but he had “it”. And MJ always took the toughest player on the team to defend. Kobe “floats” like the lazy guy he is on D he says in the doco he equates himself to a “safety” in football. Talk about delusional. This is basketball. He throws elbows like the lazy punk he is. Why other players think he is a punk and don't like him at all.

When I watched MJ on the court on O, he always looked at the floor, and putting himself in the place that would make the defense in its worst position, always keeping spacing, and always was about two moves ahead of the other team.

Kobe, watching him, he acts like Mr. Team until the 4th quarter (if that), but then all his thinking ability goes out the window. It’s all Kobe time. And he clogs up the offense and stunts movement and why he’s not as great MJ nor LeBron. The other night Lebron passed up a shot as he was covered and passed to a teammate. All the ESPN maroons said he passed up a shot! But the confidence and trust LeBron gave his teammate with that pass will last for the rest of the series and next season. Kobe doesn’t have that with his teammates. Why LeBron when all is said and done will make Kobe an afterthought. People used to say who is the next MJ? Kobe is the last of that line. It will skip him and people will say who is the next LeBron?

reply

First off, let me say Kobe is a complete PHONY, but he is probably the best individual offensive player in the history of the game. Best teammate? Best winner? No way. I wish he would just quit trying to be likable and go full a-hole. Think about how awesome it would be to have a real pro wrestling-type villain in the NBA.

zurichpoet -- did you watch Jordan when he was with the Wizards, or what? Jordan not flashy? Didn't have raw talent? Go watch some highlights from the 80s or early 90s. He was the most sensational player of his time, and not just because he hit 15 footers. And as much as I hate to admit it, Kobe probably works harder than anyone else in the league, and I'm not taking about working on his image (although he probably works harder than anyone else on that, too.)

reply

"Go watch some highlights from the 80s or early 90"

Again. I saw him in person, how he won. Live. Did you see MJ in person? I'm not trying to front you like Kobe when someone gives him a good check on D. I only want to know where you are coming from. All good!

LoL you're a *beep* idiot. Stop acting like you're far experienced on the subject because you "saw" MJ in person. How about this... I've never seen Kobe or MJ "in person" but I have seen a lot of their games and highlights and MJ was not only the better player, but he was easily more athletically gifted. All this "slower than Clyde and Hill" baloney makes it seem like MJ willed himself to be the GOAT. Yes he worked his ass off but he had insane gifts. MJ jumped higher than Kobe and was much faster; in fact go check out a video on youtube that criticizes Kobe for his lack of footspeed. Lebron and MJ were much faster than Kobe. When it comes to Kobe, he might have a more complete offense game. Although MJ always seemed to make the better decisions and was more effective shooting the basketball. The truth is he takes far more quality shots than Kobe does, although Kobe is a better 3 point shooter.

Anyway, you need to check yourself in an insane asylum for thinking that bogus. Those biased criticisms are more fitting for Lebron whose even more gifted physically than Jordan or Kobe. Lebron has the size, strength, and speed... we've never seen a player like him.

Don't push it. Don't push it or I'll give you a war you won't believe. Let it go.

This is funny:

"Stop acting like you're far experienced on the subject because you "saw" MJ in person"

I'm not acting. You see something on TV. And you can judge?

"I've never seen Kobe or MJ "in person" but I have seen a lot of their games and highlights and MJ"

If you haven't seen them Live. What are you talking about?
It's cool.

reply

LoL you are truly moronic. So you can't comment on 90% of the league because you haven't seen them live? Give me a break. I've seen Patrick Ewing live, does that mean I can now decide he's the best player of all time?

I'm not acting. You see something on TV. And you can judge?

Yep. With your logic only NBA historians that have seen every play from the past till now can decide who the best basketball player of all time is.

Don't push it. Don't push it or I'll give you a war you won't believe. Let it go.

reply

Thanks. I haven’t been called a moron in years. New experiences are always welcomed. And that you were able to come up with a 90% figure somehow, someway, shows that clearly: your mind cuts like a knife.

I still get a laugh over the fact Patrick Ewing’s swimming pool never had a deep end. It never was below six feet. So his head could never be below water.

reply

zurichpoet -- have you even seen Jordan play in person? Because unless you have... oh wait, nevermind...

reply

Great post, couldn't agree more. It was interesting watching his teammates grimace whenever he approached and acted like he has some sort of comradery with them. Guaranteed they all go home to their wives or girlfriends or whatever and go on and on about how much it pains them to have to pretend to like him - Zen Master included. And a 'multitude of languages'? Wow Kobe, you're sooo smart! Stop pretending to be smart, stop pretending to be cool, STOP PRETENDING!

reply

Luke Walton looks ill. And he is a team player who grew up with the greatest legend in his own mind his pops Bill. If he's looking "ill". OH MY! as Dick Enberg would say. Funny note: my buddy with a great sense of humor does the music or more has imput for what they play at games. Kobe got a tech one game and then started doing his "act" and they put on "Pretending" by Clapton. Kobe became enraged beyond on all reason! He doth protest too much!

Don't sweat it zurichpoet, the dumb usually congregate when they attack. They know you know better, but obviously they're too stupid to accept that. It's axiomatic of the ignorant.

You're absolutely right when you mention Jordan isn't as good an athlete as Kobe. He wasn't the best athlete in the league when he was at his prime, let alone compared to the genetic freaks we've been getting lately. I've only had the opportunity to watch him play in the early to mid-90's, plus a two games when he made his way up to Toronto, but he rarely goes in for the highlight reel dunk or reverse lay up. It's what he was known for, sure, but the vast majority of his points were from the mid range.

What marks greatness in a man isn't physical prowess (though that's useful), it's about his cut throat attitude, relentless drive and how he carries himself around those close to him.

In this MJ completely destroys Kobe.

thirdimpact1:

Going to Lakers games this year, the player that most impressed me wasn't Kobe. Sure. Kobe's smart. But: a lazy smart. I’d say keep a lookout for Russell Westbrook. He’s as fast and quick as MJ in his prime and in those non-lazy ways that made MJ great. A true talent.

Never seen the movie Billy Madison, eh?

BTW, the fact that you think your seeing MJ play in person makes you the expert above all those who only watched him on TV... makes you sound like the biggest idiot in the discussion. Regardless of what you said about him, Kobe, or anyone else... the fact that you believe seeing someone play in person enlightens you so much more than those who haven't is so absurdly dumb; it kind of blows me away.
