Proof why players don't like Kobe
Finally got to see "Kobe Doin' Work" yesterday. I like Spike Lee a lot but don't care one way or the other about Kobe, although I'm aware enough to know he's a terrific player. I'd always heard that Kobe isn't particularly well liked by teammates or opponents, but I never knew why. After watching this documentary, I do now.
Kobe doesn't shut up the entire movie. He doesn't shut up the entire game. He doesn't even shut up to let his coach speak for the 15 minutes they're in the locker room at halftime. The guy is a monumental, conceited bore, and you can tell by the look on his teammates' faces throughout the entire documentary that they're tired of hearing him run his mouth. He seriously talks more than a high-school girl at lunchtime. I lost count of the number of times during the game he called for the ball, only to be ignored.
Sorry Spike, but if you were attempting to make a film that would reveal Kobe as a humble player and a likeable teammate, you failed. But only because of the subject you were working with, not because of your directing ability, which is considerable and worthy of far more interesting subjects.
