Did all this stuff really happen? (spoilers)

I know this movie is based on a series of books that describe true events

but did a police officer who was investigating the case really have his house burned down and then was shot and killed in a police interrogation room?

reply

I don't think so. I think that the "True Events" are the Yorkshire Ripper case that is the center of this story. I know that really happened. As for the rest, i'm sure someone else on here can tell you.

Not quite but the character seems to be based on ACC John Stalker. He was investigating the RUC and the alleged "Shoot To KIll" policy. He was discredited and left the Greater Manchester force following what was dubbed "The Stalker Affair". This is a lot clearer in the book.

No. The stuff about the Yorkshire Ripper is true, including the fact that the police were for a while looking for someone with a Geordie accent because of tapes sent to them that proved to be a hoax.
