Woman Vikings? Yeah, right! Political correctness run amok

AS IF the Vikings would have taken 110-pound girls with them as warriors. They couldn't have even lifted Viking swords!

Such chicks would have been the Vikings' slaves, at best.

Just another attempt to absurdly rewrite history to make it more politically correct.

reply

Viking women fought when needed. A sword weighs less than two pounds. What's your point?

reply

I don't know viking women thing weirded me out too. So out of place.

reply

two pounds? and you freggim serious?

reply

Actually, yes. That is serious. The average weight of a Viking sword was somewhere between 2 and 3 pounds.

Don't be fooled by The 13th Warrior. Viking swords were not heavy. The average Viking sword was along the lines of a Roman Gladius.

Quidquid Latinae dictum sit, altum viditur.

reply

actually rewriting history to be male only is more absurd.

vikings would often travel an settle in new areas such as the settlements in coastal areas of ireland and britain, as well as travelling to greenland etc and brought their women an familys with them. they would be taught to fight to defend themselves in places where they may be outnumbered or find themselves in hostile situations and to help on the voyages.

celtic and pictish art shows female hunters and warriors in battle. they are less common and less known but these societys wouldnt have banned women from battle or fighting with swords as there are even limited times when men followed female warriors such as boudicia, if female warriors themselves were unheard of or looked down on they certainly wouldnt have been leading an army.

Its less common but bizare to think vikings etc lived without women, their voyages could last years an could be one way trips to new lands, women would be with them. it was only after christianity that these northern european societys suddenly decided women belonged in the home only, several prievous societys gave women the power to own property and businesses an choose to divorce and remarry, christianity then took that away and made women property of husbands.

Even the roman army had women who would follow the army on campaign, the wives an lovers of the soldiers, they would cook an clean an tend to the wounded an sometimes hunt and gather food while the camps were being built. same in the napolenic wars etc the fighting men had wives an daughters close by on campaign following the main army or regiment, many armed with pistols and daggers an ready to defend themselves if the worst came to the worst. viking an celtic an saxon women would have actually partaken in battle at times. its modern era that writes women out of the history of warfare.

still a boring film though.

reply

Germanic women fought like crazy

your point is ridicoulous

One of the only people to ever chalenge the roman empire was a women, Boudica

learn more about history before make this kind of remarks without knowlegde

reply

Watch 13th warrior. That is a pretty accurate pictation of Vikings. Yes. There were women. I do not believe they were ever the first choice for battle, more along the lines of protecting the young. However they might as well have since the viking women were still stronger and more manly then most men of other races lol. However, I do agree....I tend to think that the Norse women would have had a little meat on their bones thou.

reply

You good sir are a retard. Norse women were skilled hunters and fishermen and there are for an example stories of women fending off attacks in southern sweden from raiding danes while most of the males of the village were out on trading/raiding.

i can go on and on but im not using up valuable time on retards like you!!!!

reply

Sounds like you prefer personal attacks vs actual facts when confronted with something you don't agree with.

You spout off stories as fact with nothing to back them up. At least the OP used common sense in his critique of the cartoon. His point was they should have drawn the women more realistically.

reply

While rare, just like today, there were those women that were just genetically masculine, and no matter how much you may try to force her, short of killing her, no Viking would be able to stop her from coming on their adventures. It did happen, and some even got to go to Valhalla upon their death in battle, with special permission after showing incredible bravery and prowess in battle.

I haven't seen this film yet, I was about to, but if indeed the girl is 110 lbs then it was not realistic, the women warriors of Norway and Denmark 1000 years ago were tall and strong, and probably pretty attractive, as stocky or big women would never have the skill or ability to become warriors.

Women were also partially responsible for teaching and supervising the training of kids while the men were away, so if the village came under attack, everyone picked up swords and fought, men, women and children, and those children who could not were hidden by those women who could not.

"You were assimilated, resistance was futile!"

reply

Did you even notice the names of the women? Sif and Freyja are Goddesses in Norse myth as are pretty much all of the other names in that group.

Also... Since when do you go to a SyFy original movie for historical accuracy? Or any movie for that matter.

I don't think they wrote it for political correctness so much as entertainment. Women warriors aren't necessarily just equals and powerhouses and vehicles for feminism. Sometimes men like women who can fight and it can fill a fantasy role for them.

So please, check your attitude at the door and take a movie for what it is, entertainment. In this case, pretty low quality entertainment with just poor writing overall but entertainment nonetheless.

reply

Yes it is ridicoulous, they would NEVER bring women along as warriors. Everyone else claiming otherwise is a fu cking retard cu nt

reply

Or maybe - just maybe - it is a fact that the women in this movie are the goddesses Sif and Freya.

To words for you "Shield Maiden" Google it. Vikings had no problem with female warriors. Nor did the Celts for that matter. The Ancient Romans were another matter.

reply

Nor did the Scythians.

Also Alexander The great's sister Cynane

Polyaenus writes, "Cynane, the daughter of Philip was famous for her military knowledge: she conducted armies, and in the field charged at the head of them. In an engagement with the Illyrians, she with her own hand slew Caeria their queen; and with great slaughter defeated the Illyrian army."

The Vikings here is the Gods of the Norse mythology and Sif was a female god of war. In Norse mythology was it allot of female warriors, most famous is the Valkyries.

Females had a more dominant roll in viking society then what they had after Christianity arrived and ruined *beep* for them. They could vote at the clan/tribe councils. they was allowed to carry weapons and ride horses, rights they lost when Christianity took over.

reply

Don't blame it all on Christianity. There is nothing in the Bible keeping women in the home and as second class citizens. The "let your women be silent and be subject to their husbands, etc" has been taken out of context and abused.

It appears in the research that I have been making that female warriors have been with us all along and it is time that we are recognizing reality. Chivalry has its place but misguided chivalry gets people killed and also denies equal justice and equal responsibility for actions taken. Most issues should not be influenced by the sex of the perpetrator.

In the old west, the truth is that a lot of the women were at the barricades fighting and shooting alongside the men. As has been noted, they had to know how to fight to defend their homes whether the men were there or not. The children who were not old enough to fight were the ones loading and passing the rifles. I love a good western but it is inaccurate that the women were huddled in the corner hoping and praying for victory. They were up front putting their prayers into action by helping fight for it! Check out "Westward The Women" and "Guns At For Petticoat". Also the women in "The Outlaw Josey Wales" were not huddled in the corner when it was fighting time.

I am of the opinion that women in combat is an issue that has been settled. They are moving to the front lines to fight along side the men and most of them are carrying their weight with honor. It is sad when they are wounded or killed in combat but that is reality and we have to accept it. There are more important issues to be debating than women in combat. As far as I am concerned, that issue is settled. It is also high time that the women warriors in history and today get their overdue attention and honor. It is time for another remake of Boudica.
