Why did Nick Stahl's character kill his friend? I know he was messed up but was there another reason that set him off???

Im not sure if your talking about the guy on the roof who I think was his brother or the guy who he was locked up for killing, the brother he pushed off the roof I think because he was jealous of him and the attention he got from their mother, the other guy he killed because his girlfriend told him that he raped her although as it turns out it was the wrong guy, I don't think he meant to kill the guy though I think he lost control and couldn't stop himself.
