I've seen, you can tell he has mixed blood but he isn't particularly dark skinned.
Still, Gerard is an interesting choice. I'm sure he'll do well with it.

Just saw the film last week and I gathered from reading about it that there was a bit of a backlash about casting Gerard because of him not being black or mixed race, but he was excellent in the role. He played Dumas as a larger-than-life man with great charm and charisma. The film didn't even mention Dumas's race or if it caused him problems in the society of the time. That would also have made an interesting story, but the movie focused on his relationship with Auguste Maquet with, presumably, quite a lot of poetic licence thrown in.
