I don't know Yorkshire culture - what am I missing?

Yorkshire is the part of Great Britain that I know the least and I feel like I'm missing a whole layer of these movies.

Can anyone help me? What about Yorkshire culture would it be helpful to know?

Andrew,

Thanks to you, too! Nice response. I think I am going to watch this series again.

What you describe is a little like America's northern vs southern conflict. It's also a kind of urban vs rural cultural conflict here, as well.

Hahaha! Brilliant post, and having a Stewart Lee quote in your signature made it even better.

Ford Maddox,

A belated thank you! Very helpful response.

With the sub-titles turned on, the accents weren't a problem. (I'm generally good with think accents.) I just don't know that much about the "North" culture and this TV series seems to take it seriously.

I could imagine that the British might have similar problems with some American sub-cultures.

By the way -- I'm not complaining about the culture in this series. It makes it MORE interesting to me that I don't understand it all. Makes me want to do some research and watch it again.

Necropost ahoy!

I have not seen RR yet, but I live in Leeds, which probably gets screen-time I assume due to the story and where it is set.

Leeds today is a very modern city and one of the main finance/ business capitals of the north, it has great restaurants, shopping, pub and club scene and is generally a safe and friendly place, I for one like living here.

I was born in 76, so grew up in and around Leeds during the 80's/ 90's, it was quite different back then, it has been cleaned up a lot.

Yorkshire is really no different from anywhere else to be honest, we like our beer, complain about the weather, and have a regional dialect that no-one else can fully understand!

"No I don't wonder Marty. The world needs bad men, we keep the other bad men from the door".

I gathered...
That in the North they do what they want.
