Rules of courtesy when posting on a triology

OK, so I just watched 1974 and came here to read some insights, etc. from the first film. I have been disappointed though that many of the posts here blatantly spoil some of the facts in the upcoming films. Here's a couple of thoughts:

1) Just because someone is here, don't assume they have seen the other films already. More importantly, assume they still want to see the other films, and as such make some effort not to spoil the films for them.

2) I know this film is a couple years old, but places like IMBD have allowed us to experience films in "real time" meaning when I come here I am prepared to have spoilers for THE CURRENT FILM, but not other films in the series.

3) When in doubt, give more vague answers to pressing questions, like: "The ending was confusing...what happens to John Smith?" For any other film this leads to tons of fun exploration of possibilities, interpretations, or directoral intent. Rather than answer with a spoiler such as, "Well, it becomes clear in the third movie where John Smith is finally killed..." which ruins not just speculation, but future experience, you could just as easily say, "This becomes clearer in the next film..." or something like that.

4) Mark spoilers using IMDB markup language. As an added gesture of kindness, you could even pre-amble your spoiler with "Warning: this spoiler is from a future film" if you really think you need to talk honestly.

5) Discussing questions about future films on the series should be done on those boards, as a kindness to other film buffs.

OK, so those are some thoughts. Now, I know I can't enforce these in any way, but I *love* IMDB, the IMDB community (specifically discussion boards), and great movies. So I am just a little disappointed that I can't engage in more discussions here about THIS film without unintentionally spoiling future films.

Enjoy the show!

^I hear what you're saying, but the trilogy was released in 2009. So when, do you think, it is safe to post without putting everything within spoiler parens? Ten years after release, twenty years?

reply

Apparently, you didn't hear. What difference does it make how old a flick is? Do you think it's okay to spoil a silent film, only because it's 80+ years old? Further, people come to these fora, not only to discuss films they have seen, but also ones they are interested in seeing. Those friggin' spoiler tags exist for a reason.

Don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to (P. Green)

^If I am interested in seeing a movie, I don't come here first and read all the posts. I rent the movie and then come here to discuss it afterwards.

reply

Maybe so, but that's YOU. Not everyone does the same thing as you.

reply

^Very astute observation.

it is NEVER safe on these boards to post ANY SPOILERS EVER!!

maybe new generations will come to these boards. I post over on the Horror board and it is common courtesy to always assume NO ONE has seen anything. Many new discoveries await us.

Always watch what your thread reads!!!

^That's right. Some chump over on the Breaking Bad board gave away a HUGE plot point in the final season in the title of his post. I was not happy.

Okay, you are great lennon! Not only do you post on the soap board AND the horror board, but here too? Plus your love of Lennon? You rock on so many levels! hehhe Nice seeing you here...

Just had to say...

I just try not to say anything in a subject line that MIGHT be a spoiler, even for a classic film; I also try to use the spoiler or at least say, hey, a spoiler is coming so people can decide for themselves. Isn't hard to be courteous!

reply

Never. If you want to spoil something, cut the power from your fridge. If you want to discuss crucial plot points, put a warning in the title. I don't even do it in casual conversation, in a forum like this it's pure dickishness.

reply

Um, the IMDB forums are terrible ... rife with spoilers and unmoderated. Lecturing people about using spoiler tags will achieve nothing.

Nice. Just don't mention that the chick in The Crying Game is carrying some serious junk.

I don't want to say funniest IMDB post ever, but definitely top ten.

I totally agree with you. After watching 1974 I came here to see what others thought of it, and unfortunately someone had written the killers identity, and without any warning,so I found myself reading the finale. Why do people do that??

This thread is similar to one I posted on the Planet of the Apes message boards and I got grilled for it.
