Jimmy Saville?

Does anyone think it is impossible to view these films - and read Pearce's books - without thinking of the dark cloud Jimmy Saville cast over Leeds during this period of time. He was even mentioned in passing with the Yorkshire Ripper case. Did Pearce suspect something?

He definitely did know something, check out http://www.upsd.co.uk

By playing the role of the British eccentric Saville managed to fool the general public who wrote him off as a fool. Those in media circles seemed to know about his crime either tried to drop subtle hints or said nothing at all for fear of some kind of blowback. It is only since these crimes have to light and after his death that people who knew him have spoken out.

The following is a true story. When I was aged between 6-8 (this would be around 1982-84) the primary school I went to was part of a road safety scheme that included among other things cycling lessons. Me and my fellow pupils would have to watch a programme on BBC1 on Sunday early evenings, however my Father would watch ITV at that time. So I ended up being excluded from the scheme. Who was the presenter of this programme? Yes that's right Jimmy Saville. So kids up and down the UK got cycling lessons because they watched a programme with Jimmy Saville presenting it.

I think in retrospect Sean Beans character in "1974" has a lot in common with Saville.
