Paula's character sucked

SHe was just too boring for me to care. Not to mention she was annoying in how she accepted everything.
And to have a big chunk of the movie on this relationship bnetween Garfield and hAll's characters ruined the movie for me.

Yeah. Maybe true. But Rebecca has gone on to do more impressive work. And 1974 HAD to be about something more than just that guy from The Lord of the Rings doing nasty stuff.

I agree. The worst part about this episode was more time was spent on the sexual relationship of these 2 than the murdered girls. So pathetic and cheap.

Was her character abused by Dawson her whole life? If so Then he took her daughter and her husband ( I am guessing it wasn't self inflicted)so she would just be a shell of a human being right? With that much damage I cannot see her being Mary Poppins.

Spoilers about this movie and sequels follow.

Dawson never confessed to the crime. Dunford shot him before Dawson could finish explaining; all he said was that he was no saint, possibly only because he had the affair with Paula Garland. So his involvement with the others was hinted at, but never clarified. In the last film it looked to me as if he wasn't part of the pedophile ring, and may have even been a liability to them because of his involvement with the mother of a missing child.

You're right, I forgot that he covered for the reverend. The part about money laundering, was that in the movie? The dialogue was so dense, I guess I missed some stuff.

Thank you, that helped me make sense of it.

Paula's character was severely depressed. She had lost her child to a serial killer, possibly a pedophile. She has an idea an innocent man had been framed for the murder in lieu of finding the killer, and children around her continue to disappear. She's caught up in a helpless and hopeless situation, and her life is devoid of all meaning.

That explains why she isn't a ball of fun, and why she seeks whatever diversion she can find, just to stay halfway sane.

I'm not saying you have to care, but her behavior is perfectly consistent with her circumstances. I think it's a brilliant piece of writing.
