Best actor in the series?

Everyone acted well, but my favorite actor was Andrew Garfield playing Eddie Dunford. An actor new to me, but I look forward to watching him again.

The guy who played BJ was excellent, David Morrissey is always great, and I liked the actor who played Craven's sidekick.

If you enjoyed Andrew Garfield's performance you might like to watch 'Boy A', in which he plays the lead. Tough subject matter but since you enjoyed 'Red Riding' that shouldn't be a problem.

Personally, I had mixed feelings about 'Boy A'. Although it was excellent TV viewing and generally a cut above a lot of things I've seen, I did have some qualms about the writer's / director's choices. Especially when it came to one scene's portrayal (or, to be more accurate, the absence of its portrayal). To put it bluntly (and without spoilers), I felt like the writer coaxed a particular emotional response from the audience during a pivotal plot point. Of course, that's what film typically does - manipulate emotion - but the gravity and the sensitivity of the subject matter depicted in this scene deserved a more impartial treatment, in my opinion. Anyway, all that aside, Garfield was outstanding. As was Peter Mullan (who also stars).

The boy who played BJ (Robert Sheehan) was in an Irish film called 'Song for a Raggy Boy' as a child. It's another 'grim but good' film.

This is getting to be a longer post than I intended (!) so I'll just say very simply that I enjoyed David Morrissey's acting in 'Red Riding' the most. They were all good but something about Morrissey just broke my heart. Sean Harris (Bob Craven) and Daniel Mays (Michael Myshkin) also stood out for me as actors I had not really seen before.

^I'm going to see if Netflix has the movies you mentioned and I will take a look at them. Coincidentally I am watching a very good movie right now, Harry Brown, in which Sean Harris is featured in a very creepy role.

Cheers, I'll check that out.

Have just watched this series on 4od, was gonna watch it over 3 nights but it was so gripping i've just watched all 3 episodes one after the other.

In terms of the performances I think there are too many good ones to single anyone out. What I will say though is this is a stunning ensemble.

The likes of Rebecca Hall and Andrew Garfield would not have been as well known to UK audiences as Morrisey, Bean, Addy and Clarke when this was made, but both are now doing very well in Hollywood, Garfield could well be on the A list soon!

You do know Andrew Garfield is the new Spider-Man, right? I only recently found out he was one of the main guest stars in Doctor Who's "Daleks in
Manhattan" 2ptr.

In the US-
Morrisey would probably be best known for Basic Instinct 2, which was a flop.
Bean is known for LOTR and maybe Sharpe, if people are interested in them, and now Game of Thrones.
Before GoT, Addy was probably best known for Flintstones sequel, Still Standing, co-starring with Heath Ledger (and Tudyk) in Knight's Tale, maybe Full Monty, which was thought of as an "independent import".
Sheehan - only major role in US is Nic Cage's sidekick in "Season of the Witch", but Misfits is a growing hit.

There may have been a few more British "faces" that may be known to some over here, but those four would be the best known. Even Mays is a virtual unknown over here, despite his recent appearance on DW and I enjoyed him in Ashes to Ashes, as well, which is another hidden gem. (LoM adaptation failed, so no chance of A2A.) Then again, I do tend to enjoy more UK faire than US.

Both Michelle Dockery and Jim Carter of Downton Abbey have small parts in the Trilogy. Dockery plays Dunford's girlfriend and Carter is one of (if not THE) chief of WYPD.

Are there any bad performances in this series? I think there were som many good ones, I wouldn't want to choose.
I didn't know the names of everyone involved, even though I've seen most of them before, so I kept referring to Dalziel, lady Mary and Boromir :-)

It was Ned Stark for me, not Boromir. If only because of all the references to "The North" and the killer being called a Wolf
