Leonard Cole dead or alive?

Unless I misunderstood something, in RR83 Leonard Cole was killed while in police custody but in RR74 Eddie Dunford interviews him after he was released from the police. Did I miss something?

When a new girl goes missing in '84, Jobson has doubts about Myshkin's guilt and goes to pick up some of Myshkin's old buddies, (who are free, having been released in '74) including Leonard.

In the movie, they just have Piggot sitting in the car going through Leonard's things and holding the belt and looking at it for a length of time. Your referencing the book actually helps this make more sense.
