Why is the Volturi even needed?

If humans know about vampires, there's nothing they can do about it. What if a vampire uploads a video of themselves to YouTube, and it instantly goes viral?

If you go as far as the last movie/book, we learn from two of the oldest vampires used to roam free and were open about their actions to humans, but the Volturi sorta "corrupted" all that in a sense, forcing vampires into a secrecy.

I mean, someone could reveal it to everyone, but we see that if Edward did that, he would've been killed instantly.
