unrealistic that the Volturi didn't kill Edward

He clearly wanted to die, and had made it clear that he was a threat to them. Considering the low value they put on life, surprised they didn't end him on the spot. I doubt they could view Edward's life as that sacred, in spite of his power: He wanted to die, was a threat, refused to use his powers for them, and was generally considered an oddball for his vegetarian way of life. I'm sure there are enough vampires to make him not all that special, and they can always make more.

Even though Edward didn't join the Volturi at the time he thought Bella was dead, Aro hoped in time he would change his mind. He believed Edward's gift was so unique -- an ability he'd never come across in 3000+ years -- it should not be destroyed.

Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. You were the best.

Marcus wants death, but Aro & Caius refuse to end him. They keep him around for his gift, and no doubt feel that they could do the same with/for Edward. Aro would never kill a vampire with such a gift as Edward's ... not until he had another vampire with a gift equal to or superior to Edward's. He has done that in the past.

[Case in Point]

Didyme, Aro's sister, had a gift similar to Corin's, so he didn't need her anymore. And when Didyme and Marcus decided they were leaving the coven, Aro killed his sister.

Jasper's gift is similar to Corin's as well, but her gift is much stronger, so Aro doesn't need him. He would take Jasper into his coven though, if Alice were to join the guard. Though, he would kill Jasper if he tried to get Alice to leave with him, or prevent her from joining the Volturi.

[/Case in Point]

Then, when Bella & Alice show up, Aro finds two more he wants as guards in his coven. With these three Aro could be invincible. Renata could protect him physically, and Bella could protect him mentally. (Though he didn't know the full extent of her gift at the time of New Moon, he knew Bella was some sort of shield.) Then he'd have Alice & Edward on either side of him. He'd touch them in order to read their minds ... and through Edward he'd know what everyone around him was thinking, and through Alice he could plot strategies and see which path would get him what he wanted without the loss of Volturi lives.

Aro uses Chelsea & Corin to keep Marcus loyal, and able to cope the little he is able to. He no doubt feels he can do the same with Edward.

Just sharing:

After seeing Twilight the movie you mentioned that you wish you had thought of Bella catching a glimpse of Edward watching her sleep and thinking it was only a dream. Are there any new moments in the New Moon movie that you thought…I wish I had thought of that?

... there is a bit of a fight sequence in the Volturi tower now that isn’t there in the book. At first, I had some resistance to this idea because in my mythology, if you start a fight with the Volturi, your story ends right there. It would have been kind of a bummer to have Edward, Bella, and Alice slaughtered in Volterra and no happy reunion scene (and no Eclipse or Breaking Dawn). But I worked with Melissa Rosenberg (the screen writer) and Summit until we came up with a solution that made sense with the story but also gave them the visual action they needed. And now that it’s all put together and beautiful, I love it and kind of wish Felix had gotten his moment in the book.
