Did anyone else hate Dialtone?

All she made me think of was that stupid tween they introduced in Clone Wars, the one who kept calling Anakin "Skyguy".

Elements of the past and the future, combining to make something not quite as good as either.

reply

Nah. She had a total of like 2 minutes screen time and served a purpose.

reply

Agreed.

I don't really care one way or the other that they changed the gender of such a minor character. I am just glad that they didn't make her wear that goofy metal backpack that the original had.

reply

She kept reminding me of Frankie from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, so no I didn't hate her in the slightest.

Still got my fingers crossed, waiting for Judas Contract to get green-lit

reply

I was impressed by Grey Delisle's various roles on the show. Dialtone also reminded me of Frankie (whom I love). But, I admit to really liking her version of both Baroness and Scarlett. In fact, her Scarlett was just as good as BJ Ward's.

reply

Yeah, I just hate it when they reuse names, characters etc, but assign them to totally different characters.

She didn't bother me much, but why call here Dial Tone? Just come up with a new name for a Comm officer, like Dial Up or High Speed or whatever.

They just reuse names too much in Transformers and GI Joe. The old Dial Tone was a cool character, he shouldn't be replaced by some generic chick.

reply

The Dial tone female character actually came from the new IDW comic series. The writers had created a new female character for the comic book, and then Hasbro nix'd the character saying that they already had enough communication characters.. so they ended up calling her Dial Tone (technically an already established communications person).

I think it's a slap in the face to the "respect" that long term established characters should have... but I hope this explains the character to you.

I hated the character as well, but moreso because of the gender change, and not her on time screen annoyance. I was far more annoyed by Duke, the evil version of Storm Shadow, and the non-faithful-to-her-fiance Scarlett.

I'm amazed at how many of you seem to be confusing this series with the comics. You guys all do realize it's not the same thing?

This was an amalgam of the the comics and the 80s show. Inspired by both, but 100% faithful to neither.

If some of you all could realize that, you'd be happier.

reply

Why don't they just use new characters then?

I'm getting tired of having 50 versions of every character in TF and GI Joe.

reply

Because people don't react well to new characters. Hell, they tried it in the 80s with both GI Joe and Transformers. People got all bent out of shape.

If people didn't "react well" to new characters we'd still have the original 15 or so Joes and Cobras.

A steady stream of new characters are what made GI Joe so great in the 80's, if you read the comic it didn't center around any one character (until sales started flagging late in the series and they turned it into the Snake Eyes show, which was horrible).

If they didn't bring new characters in, there would be no Duke, no Flint. No Lady Jaye, nobody except the original green guys.

I'm just saying, instead of rehashing Snake Eyes or Duke or Cobra Commander for the millionth time how about a new story every once in a while. I know GI Joe is nostalgia driven at this point but damn, come up with something original.

reply

I agree wholeheartedly with what you are saying, jimanchower. When G.I. Joe was in it's heyday, it was a constant revolving door of new characters. The best ones stuck, and some did not. If we were having new characters born, we wouldn't have to change the old characters to fit into a new mold.

In my opinion, most of the old guys should be retired or Generals by now sitting behind the desk rehashing old stories about the early days to the new guys. And hasbro could finally get behind some new ninja that could be bad to the bone, and not just trying to make Storm Shadow's square peg fit into their round hole...

Ok, once again people seem to be confusing the cartoon with the comic. This isn't the comic.

For love denied blights the soul we owe to God.

reply

Why do you keep saying that?

We know it's not the comic. It's yet another version of the same old characters, which is what we're talking about.

There are too many versions.

reply

I keep saying that because people keep going back to it. I brought up the GI Joe and Transformers cartoons and someone had to chime in with, "But if you read the comics blah blah blah."

Yes, it's the same characters. Because those are the ones the majority of the people love. And don't kid yourselves, it's about what the majority wants. Not a select few.

reply

All right, now that you've made your OPINION clear, you can stop saying the same thing over and over. I see why you call yourself "Preach" Caleb.

reply

Also, people keep "going back to the comic" because it was the highlight of the Joe's popularity and also it contains the original origin stories for most of the characters. Its like a star wars fan referring to the original trilogy.

The cartoon started as 30 second commercials to promote the comic. So, the cartoon was a spin off of the comic. It was intended to be the SAME characters.

And, as far as I can remember, Larry Hama, the guy who wrote the comic, came up with most of the characters, or at least their back stories, and the comic was the best version.

The cartoon was for very young kids, which was great when you were 10, but try watching it now. It's pretty damn crappy. Even when we were kids everyone was always laughing about how no one ever died. But you read the comic and people were killed left and right.

It's amazing the comic was as well written as it was and as good as it was for much of it's run when you look at the crap Hama had to deal with, at first he couldn't kill any Joes, Hasbro was constantly coming up with lame characters like Cobra La, Raptor, Fast Draw, Croc Master, Darklon, etc and Hama had to find a way to fit most of them into the stories (he put his foot down with Cobra La thank God).

At the end of the comics run it was pretty bad, I just re-read my Joe comics and from about 120 on it just got worst and worse, at the end it was terrible. The art in the 140-155 issues was just God awful and the characters, like Star Brigade and Ninja force, were horrible, too many neon colored guys. Just bad. I remember reading those back in the day and thinking how sad it was that a great comic like GI Joe had sunk to such lows. It really was one of the best comics of the 80's.

Anyway, like I said, I just wish they would come up with some new characters and stories instead of replaying the same Duke VS Cobra Commander crap over and over and over. I mean Duke wasn't even that big of a character in the comics and CC was actually "dead" for about 40 issues or so, Cobra had several "rulers" over the years and GI Joe, while there were a few mainstays (Scarlett, Snake Eyes, etc), always had a revolving cast.

I guess it's different now though, people just want the same thing over and over. Most people don't care about the actual stories, they just want new versions of Snake Eyes and Optimus Prime to put up on their bookshelves. That's one of the problems with being tied to toys.

reply

The highlight of the Joe's popularity were the toys, not comics.

Besides, this is judging one medium against another. It's not the same no matter how much the fan boys want it to be.

It all has it's own continuity.

This thread seems to have gotten way off topic. To answer your question about Dial-Tone, I didn't hate her at all. I actually thought she was pretty damned cute for a dude. I just wish she'd retained the 'stache. =p If you want to justify the gender-bend in your head somehow, you could always imagine she's the original's little sister or something. Like, umm... Maybe he retired from the team and made millions during the web boom of the 90's.

As far as the deeper discussion going on here, why is it necessary to pick one genre over another? Why couldn't people like both the comics AND the show (GASP)? It seems like all this back-and-forth is just a way for fellow geeks to tout their geek authority and/or expertise on whatever geek subject is at hand. Do you really want to come across as some kind of geeklitist? Why couldn't we like Star War AND Star Trek? Why couldn't we like Kirk AND Picard? Why couldn't we find Wheelie AND Daniel completely annoying? Why couldn't we want Scarlett to enter into a polygamist marriage to both Duke AND Snake-Eyes? Just enjoy all of it and be thankful that Resolute gave us a much more longtime-fan-friendly version of G.I. Joe than the live action movie.

As for where it could or should go from here? I'd love to see a lot of my favorite 80's characters get 21st century updates, but I'd also like to see the introduction of new characters. Again... Why couldn't we want both old AND new? Anyway, there's my two cents. Any opinions?

reply

GI JOE had a little too much testosterone, soooo a little gender bending in this new (and best) version of GI JOE worked out fine.
