Spoiler alert! Guido? What happened?

I saw the rough cut at Toronto International Film Festival. It seemed that this was filmed as one long movie, but then split into two parts at the last second. A few scenes didn't make sense (although they probably would with the second half of the movie I reckon). So this brings me to my question, perhaps for someone who speaks french and understood it better. What happened to Guido (Gérard Depardieu)? Did he get assassinated by the cops? Or was it another syndicate?

The man parked outside told the police he was "avec la maison" (I think). I presume that means with the police (?), but was a lie.
I guess it was revenge for the robbery of the other syndicate carried out by Mesrine.

That's why I said it was a lie..
He said something to the police who were going to move him on from outside the café.

reply

Yup, he said that he was "With the house" (avec la maison). I thought it meant that they were waiting for someone inside the apartment.

reply

I'm pretty sure he said they were there on a stake-out (as cops), that's why it suprised me when they shot them instead of arresting them.

"Name one thing you're gonna need this stupid *beep* rope for."

reply

no he said he lived there and had a permit to park...that's what i got anyway

I got the feeling it was a rival gangster taking revenge (maybe over Guido killing their boss, remember that scene?).

To me, it appeared that Guido & Paul were definitely rubbed out by a member of the police force, who either might have been on the take with the mob, or an ally of the ex-OAS member that Guido killed after he & Jacques raided his files at gunpoint. The plainclothes cop told the the two flics walking the beat, "I'm from Headquarters, & I'm staking out a hideaway", and then he flashes his police ID at them. ("On est de la maison" = "I'm from headquarters")

Guido already knew that it was getting too hot when he advised Jacques and Jeanne to leave France. He tells Jacques that both the mob and the cops were hunting Jacques down, to kill him, and that Guido can no longer cover for Jacques.

It all seemed related and coherent to me.
