I actually really enjoyed this movie...

..i think you really do have to have a love of those late-night, cheeseball
kung-fu movies of yesteryear, and it probably helps to dig blaxploitation..

It had a gaggle of colourful characters acted with gusto by the cast...
Characters like Jack Knife, Madame Blossom, X-Blade and Brassman were just
great creations, and Silver Lion was a hilariously over-the-top villain.

Yeah a lot of people complain that RZA was flat, but i always find that the
central protagonist of MOST of many westerns is usually pretty flat... I think
it fit well and made sense.

This is one that i would actually pay about 5-10 dollars for to add
to my collection. Great, kung-fu/grindhouse fun!

I completely agree.. Even RZA's acting fit perfectly with the "stern" comedy, for me it was a non-stop laugh fest, particularly as each new character was introduced. And the tracing of David Bowie's hair style history was a real hoot, even a bit witty.

I actually normally dislike anything involving Eli Roth, so this was a surprise (even Inglorious Basterds--would swap its imdb rating with Iron Fists). Was surprised to see a pretty low rating for this one, especially since Tarantino-involved flicks have been drooled over lately.

I agree. My g/f and I sat down to watch this last night. We had heard that the film had been slated by critics, but we wanted to watch it anyway due to Tarantino's connection. We both thoroughly enjoyed and I would happily add this film to my DVD collection.

While it is true that RZA wont be winning any 'Best Actor' nominations, we thought his acting and voice-over work fitted the tone of the film perfectly.

People are too quick to criticise films that have an artistic flare, or are filmed differently to the big Hollywood Blockbusters. Personally, I love films that break the rules and are different from the norm.

The characters were great, the action and fighting scenes were immense, and there was plenty of humour.

This film got 8/10 from me as I enjoyed every single minute (she gave it 7/10).

I actually enjoyed it too, and I don't even particularly "love those late-night, cheeseball kung-fu movies of yesteryear."

I just thought the movie had character, and I liked the concept. However, I do agree with most people on here about Rza's performance. HE WAS EXPRESSIONLESS throughout the movie! The only time I only ever saw expression on his face was when he smiled as he thanked Jack at the end. When he got called the N-word, when his mother killed(?) that "white guy," when he had Lady Silk's dead body in his arms, etc. he had ZERO expression, which I found really uncomfortable to watch. Truth be told, I think Rza's just a weird-looking guy. His eyes looked tired the entire film, which I think prevented him to show any emotion. And all those slow-motions shots of him being all "badass" and stuff, punching the baddies and Brass Body, sorry, but he just looked way odd.

But apart from that, I enjoyed the movie...certainly more than I was able to enjoy Shyamalan's The Last Airbender -- and I'm a fan of the cartoon; I really, really, really wanted to like the live-action adaptation because I wanted to see the whole story done in live-action. But even with my built-in bias in favor of the title, I was still unable to enjoy it. Now THAT movie had bad storytelling, pacing, acting, dialogue, fight scenes, and so on.

This movie? As far as "cheeseball kung-fu movies" go, it was enjoyable if you're willing to overlook Rza's performance, and that guy who played the Bronze Lion. He was horrible, too.

I just got finished watching it and I really liked it too. The characters, humor, scenery, and story were all awesome. I don't understand the low rating it has but it doesn't take away my enjoyment of the film.

Utah! Get me two.

I thought is was awesome too! Screw the haters!

As a filmmaker, I wonder why RZA chose to slow the scenes down. It's the incoherence in the fight scenes, chopped up effects, that made this movie painful to watch. I can say it's his acting, but it isn't the straw that broke this camel's back.

RZA has no business playing the lead.

reply

I just wish Michael Jai White was cast as the lead other than that I really liked the movie
