YES it's bad - and THIS is why

I'm not looking to get into a slagging match with fans of this film - these are just my opinions on WHY this film is what it is - a lame straight to dvd 'bad copy' of a copy of previously played characters, genres, ideas, styles and clichés.

1- not only did the matchstick character look stupid but he was a complete embarrassment to watch. for some reason he appeared to think he was heath ledger from the dark knight. a silly character who was VERY poorly written, at times it seemed as though he needn't be in the film at all. in fact they may have well had him ware a t-shirt saying "look at me ooooh im pissing all over heath's grave and the director seems to think this is just fine"

2- the pan-zooms on the buildings in the intro had no business, one long zoom to the building in question would have been better than panning in on the corners of random structures.

3- the film blew it's load all over 'shoot em up' from the get-go. no brood no tension just bad splatter supposedly yealding a 'wow' factor.

4- i couldn't figure out, at times, if this film was parodying itself as being a bad imitation or if the director was REALLY under the impression that they were pulling this off.

5- the modern 'retro-noir' thing was done supreme by Sin City and not too long ago KILLED by the savage poo that was 'The Spirit'. this film came off as a very bad imitation of an imitation but without the visual effects budget.

6- throwing in one cool 50's car and a mustang does not make everything ok.

7- horrific cgi, inconsistent sound editing, cheesy effects.

8- the casting agent wishes they could have afforded Scarlet.J instead of Elsa Pataky.

9- Ving Rhames is an excellent actor and deserves better. i last saw him in 'bringing out the dead' within which he was excellent.

10- the first 37 minutes felt like an hour.

11- the cinematography was cliché deluxe.

12- the script was cliché deluxe, not even in the self-aware sense.

13- the titles looked cheap.

14- the 'innocent looking sexy Japanese girl' with the skills of an assassin - yawn yawn yawn - Kill Bill owned it and Bitch Slap rinsed it - BORING. and her look of 'recollection' about her life as she straddles malone on the stage, is so amateur, it was hard to watch. surely the director is supposed to guard the editor from including such 'performances' and out-right horrible 1st year acting school delivery.

+ as far as i know even the most insistent of sound designers do not believe that a sword being swished through the air makes a sound like it's grazing another metal object.

15- all the flashbacks of malone watching his family getting murdered never happened then? and when he finally, by some kind of voodoo manages to contact them by phone he chooses to hang up. yeah right.

16- the colour grading was horrific, blacks far too crushed in many shots and a vast number were miss-matched.

17- the entire picture was obviously(?) shot on a digital camera, the genesis? or maybe even . . . an SLR? sure as *beep* wasn't done using a RED ONE. if this turns out in fact to not have been shot using the mankest digi-cam i would be in shock and awe. if anything this film is either TRYING to destroy the rep of digital cinima, or has been directly employed by kodak to do so.

----

all said and done this is a BAD rip-off of a REALLY BAD film - The Spirit. i say 'rip-off' but it doesn't even then come close to something that was *beep* in the first place. even the key-art was a rip-off of a bazillion other artworks/dvd covers/posters. Sin City isn't god on wheels but it sure did set a damn high standard for any modern 'retro-noir' style film.

in conclusion this film is a DELUXE CACK-FEST and the bastard son of CLICHE SUPREME. it's not hard to see why it went straight to dvd and it's a DAMN shame that Russell Mulcahy - director of Highlander - has this to show as his latest work.

I concur. Nicely put.

I wanted to like it because of the actors but after the cool intro sequence it slowly dawned on me that the director and writer had no clue what they were doing. Although it was watchable (and kinda likable), for an avid movie fan like myself it felt like the director hadn't watched a movie since the end of the 80's and completely missed the whole post-modernistic wave of the 90's.

But hey, maye the director meant it to be somekind of parody-of-a-pastiche-of-a-pastiche type thing, but still it simply didn't work

I enjoyed The Spirit though. I felt the same elements that made Give 'm Hell, Malone a trainwreck did work in this movie :-)

reply

hey DM,

come orrrrn! the spirit was a turd! thanks for the heads-up, starting tho think i was alone in calling out this junk (no offence to anyone who worked hard on it, but.

reply

This was pretty standard yeah. As someone else said after the intro, you might as well give up on this. Clearly the writer and director had never seen a noir movie. They just know some of the general cliches of the genre, and decided to try and make one. A weak attempt, except for the intro as stated.

But I agree with DM. The Spirit was pretty good. Not in a serious movie kind of way. But it was clearly supposed to be a dark comedy that somehow got edited wrong. If you watch it as a comedy, The Spirit is actually pretty entertaining.

"Look, Hank. Have you ever seen such a beautifully punted baby?" - King of the Hill

reply

. . . purely as a comedy i see, i'll rent it again. but to be honest all i saw was bad actor-directing sloppy edit choices and something that thought it even came close to sin city. almost embarrassing to watch.

reply

Sin City was rubbish anyway.

reply

yeah it only hit a new bar-high in terms of graphic film making - i suppose you prefer films like 'transformers' or the jen-butler rom-com 'bounty hunter'. pft

reply

.... So? Was there a point to all of this? What do you hope to gain from posting your list throughout the board?

reply

"+ as far as i know even the most insistent of sound designers do not believe that a sword being swished through the air makes a sound like it's grazing another metal object. "

You hear that in a lot of movies. You also hear it when they pull it out of sheathes for some reason. No, it makes no sense at all. Oh well.

1. And if Heath still was alive no one would have cared, but the guy is dead so, oh brother. A strong point to dislike the movie. Matchstick is really the first character to be based on another in the world of movies. Burn it to hell, ... no pun intended.

2. Dunno what you're on about, the tune and shots fit perfectly, maybe you're not into jazz?

3. Comparing this with Shoot Em Up is like comparing Titanic with Das Boot, they both ships too. This has guns too, so yea, good comparison. Shoot Em Up is more like brain at zero entertainment, but some people just like it like that I guess. Not saying that Give Em Hell is brilliant but at least has a more "natural" story en less "impossible" facts.

4. An imitation of what then?

5. And yes, like in 3, visual effects are way more important then story for some people. I dont mind less visual goodies if it means better story, heck, I even prefer it.

6. Even if they wasn't there it still be ok.

7. Like 3 and 5

8. Yea, Elsa is one ugly woman ...

9. He was perfect for the role, his presence alone should've told you this is gonna be good, the guy never shows up in bad stuff.

10. Yes, something I noticed during my years visiting these boards, alot of people have problems of getting entertained by simple things, guess you're one of those.

11. Of course it was, it's the whole point.

12. Same as 11.

13. So are most of you're points.

14. And that only proves how well you payed attention, it wasn't her life story, it was Malone's. And you haven't seen much movies if you think Kill Bill is the first one to evolve around ninja stuff. Kill Bill is even a bigger ripoff then this one. Watch Lady Snowblood.

15. Again another proof how you didn't pay attention. He hangs up because the danger of his line of work isn't over yet. He is still a mercenary for hire, meaning he's next job will put the lives of his family at stake yet again.

16. 3,5 and 7, I couldn't care less.

17. 3,5, 7 and 16, couldn't even care lesser. So a movie get shot on something different then you are used to so obviously it is a bad movie? ... Well whatever floats your boat.

Thanks to mindless people like you it went straight to DVD, but I don't care, I don't go to theatres anyway, I just buy the movies and watch at home in my private "theatre" . The DVD is in my collection and its there to stay, and glad I have it.

It's been awhile since I read anything quite so unintentionally funny and hypocritically stupid as this statement...slagging off at others for allegedly not doing, what you don't do yourself.

Oh humor what a hard thing to grasp ... sigh.

Yeah! That's right. We all understand that you missed a career in stand-up and are now trying to make up for it with your "hilarious" post.

reply

So ... what you think, is what everyone else thinks too?
Phew.
Oh wait, thats the royal "we" no doubt.
But yea like i said, humor, hard thing to grasp, second post going on about it again, only proves it.

i agree and disagree with both of you, the movie was bad, but not for op stupid points. the director is great, although too much under qt spell, but the writing was bad, there is a thin line between being artistic and being stupid, for example, the leading lady going to warn malone about two assassins coming to kill him, and they waist time talking until the assassins come, it's incredibly stupid

reply

If a lady came to you and said, hey, youre gonna get killed. You would run off immediately?
I would think she was bonkers. But then again im a nobody , malone is a PI

even if malone wouldn't believe her, she is insane for waiting for that pyro psycho to get her

reply

Running away from a guy who can easily protect her? you are making less sense by the minute ...
