Classic hard-boiled 50's fashion, architecture, and cars; but lots of modern cars (ie., the taxi and other background cars) and architecture, too. Not to mention that Mallone's Mateba Model 6 Unica was designed in 1997...
Is there any definitive word from the creators as to what year "Give 'em Hell, Malone" is supposed to be set? Modern day, or maybe some undefined timeless era?
It reminds me of "Streets of Fire", with Michael Pare and Willem DaFoe. Filmed in Chicago, it took place in a kind of "alternate universe", like Gotham City.
It does make it convenient to cross time barriers. That way you can't really have any bloopers (I meant to do that!) The one I noticed which they put emphasis on was when Thomas Jane cut Elsa Pataky's seat belt, and she said she couldn't ride in his car because she didn't want him getting a ticket. Then, at the end of the movie TJ's putting quarters in a payphone.
I wanted to hate the movie because of how cheesy it was (Before anyone says cheesy, c'mon...French Stewart? or Doug Hutchison's bad Pacino?) but I'm kinda hoping for that sequel. If for nothing else but to see who else's dead career they're going to try and revive. It's like the casting call for "The Love Boat". All in all, if the word gets out on this movie, it is destined to be a cult classic.
because every car besides the buick were very contemporary... not just background either, the flower van was very clearly a 90's fleetvan.... also, everyone but the main characters dressed normal for current time periods...
i thought maybe they were all rejects from the same mental institution with a similar condition that made them think they were dick tracy characters.
There is also a reference to the internet at one stage in the middle of the film which I thought was kind of odd in a film which does appear to aim for a certain undefined timelessness.
