Great comedy about fathers and sons

I just watched this movie with my parents. All three of us are from New Zealand. I have lived in Montreal for about a year and am starting to come to grips with the culture and language. Mum and Dad have been here for 10 days and have barely even watched a subtitled movie in their life. Yet despite this, the three of us thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It had a satisfying storyline, great acting and direction and highly resonant subject matter. The interplay between fathers and sons is the main focus of the film. Dramatic and comic sequences come in quick succession and are masterfully edited together. Excellent movie.

Yeah, perfect balance between comedy and drama. I was impressed.

Why is it that French Quebec films are so much more successful than English Canadian films?

Successful in what sense? Being good films, or being profitable films? Often the two are not the same.

All I know is I'm grateful for Quebec films, because without them, Canada would be almost a total cinematic wasteland. I'm continually embarrassed by the faux-US SyFy/Hallmark/Lifetime trash put out by shameless English Canadian filmmakers, aided by the public purse. They have no guts. They have no honour. They have no talent. But then from Quebec, you get a story that belongs and entertains, filmed and acted in a reasonable manner.

This wasn't a great film, but it was competent comedic fare (7/10), and didn't pretend to be something it wasn't. I'm glad to have seen it.

I never really thought about it but now that you say it, you are perfectly right!

But there's plenty trash movies coming from Quebec as well though.
