I only knew a little about the French Resistance...through films such as The Great Escape and Casablanca. This film had a strong impact on me...right now, right this minute neo Facists are recruting and distributing propaganda in London -- the BNP -- the british national party. The BNP would like to throw out of England all immigrants, all black people, all Jews, all Indians, all Pakistanis, all Chinese...out of England. They are using the phrase "indiginous," as in, "you are not indiginous to this country!" This means that even if you are born in the country they would have you ejected.

Please, can those of us with sound minds remember the words of Martin Niemöller, a German anti-Nazi pastor. He said:

THEY CAME FIRST for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

THEN THEY CAME for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

THEN THEY CAME for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

THEN THEY CAME for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.

THEN THEY CAME for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up."

I believe that there are always elements like the BNP, it is simply setting the recipe right for these guys to take power- which means masses unemployed, more starving, loss of status among the middle class while the upper class moves dar above the people, and a period of globalization and heated economic growth-leading to border a being crossed by mire and more well educated and sought after workers, the cream of the crop from their prospective religious, ethnic and national groups. However, like a game of musical chairs, once the inflated growth halts, the native population ,whether it be Britain or Germany, looks at all the relatively wealthy foreigners and the well paying jobs they occupy and ask why they, true citizens of nation are starving to death.
People like the BNP then start getting votes, and the unscapegoated members of the haute bourgeoise ride on their coattails to hang onto power longer.
Simplification of course, but to me BNP and others are harmless without an economic crisis caused by the cyclical nature of the capitalist free market system and the predictable greed by those involved in banking and the upper echelons of the financial/trading world.
Why we don't switch to socialism is a mystery. Russia has already shown that the authoritarian nature of their state is surviving,whether democratic, capitalist, or soviet.

I agree with you. I was so touched by this movie. I can't belive it didn't get better distribution. When I look at the gross receipts I cant see how it even broke even. It was such an excellent movie.

All of these things are now forming in the US. I fear it will become a very nasty place. It already is beginning to happen.

Why bother with the pipsqueaks of the BNP when there are three fascist parteis with their snouts in the Westminster trough?
