why oh why did they cancel this?

It had strong following, and great potential, and its not like HBO could use the "enormous budget" excuse like in Rome and Deadwood. to bad, i really dug this show. something different than the stuff i usually watch.

It is ridiculous that they cancelled it. The show they kept ("Enlightened") - was anything but! And, in fact, this program had better ratings than Enlightened.

This show had some great humor just not seen in other series. Such great acting and writing. I just don't get HBO.

The ratings problem was as much HBO's fault as anything else. Half the time it was hard to know when the show would air. And the season just was unclear.

So many of HBO's shows are placed at different times and there is not a consistent night - that it is hard to watch every show - even when they do come on - except for the staple Sunday night programs.

This is probably the last running HBO program that I found really compelling to watch. The rest may get some critical acclaim but they have little quality appeal, imo. Their dramas have dropped off (they don't compare to The Wire or Sopranos). And, Entourage was the last great comedy.

But, Bored To Death had great quirkiness.

I really miss this show. It was funny, witty, and had a fanatic cast. I was completely shocked when it was canceled as I expected it to be a hit.

I never heard of this show until now and I instantly love it.
Sounds like HBO did a terrible job marketing this gem. The cancellation is ridiculous. Yet again incompetent managers ruin another great work of art. Sigh

I don't think this show had much of a cultural footprint. Enlightened -- perhaps it had lower ratings, but it had more buzz, too. I have HBO forever, and I wasn't even aware this show existed -- true story.

A show being great doesn't mean it will find an audience. HBO runs on subscription fees not advertising so if a show pulls low numbers or doesn't draw new people to the channel they HAVE to cancel it. If they didn't they would go out of business.

Just be happy you got 3 seasons. Enjoy them for what they are and praise HBO for letting it live as long as they did. If the show was on fox it would have been killed by episode 3 of season 1.

Well, if they depended on advertising, ratings would be much MORE important, and they actually be much quicker to cancel. This wouldn't have lasted half a season on network TV, even with a lot of positive buzz.

HBO does have to maintain good, quality programming to keep subscribers, but that doesn't explain "Sex and the City", "Girls", "True Blood", and "Entourage". Ratings obviously do matter or we wouldn't have had about 40 combined seasons of that crap. But there was a real lack of promotion of this show.

Also, there are plenty of cult movies, but it's unusual for there to be a cult TV show, or at least one that lasts very long. This lasted more seasons than "Arrested Development", "Twin Peaks", or "Kolchak, the Night Stalker".

Idk. The third season isnt nearly as clever and looks more expensive than ever.
