Sympathy for Mike?

I really didnt feel sorry for him...I felt sooooo much sympathy for his son though. I just felt like he'd kind of caused it in a way because his son needed him because he was scared but as soon as he heard that Aleeha(sp?) wanted to see him he left. I felt sorry for him when his wife found out about him and the doctor but not when he chose her over his son.

Also, his son didn't shoot himself did he? It was the opposition right??

Overall though I totally loved this drama. Was well written and acted - all round brilliant.

I think the idea was to build up a dislike of Mike up until the final minutes of the show when we suddenly turn into feeling sorry for him.

We're not sure whether he killed him self or not although when he says "*beep* it!" and aims his weapon towards the door we can assume he was going to make one last stand and thus it probably was the Milita.

I was unsure how he died as he was left on the bed with blood from a head wound. If he'd been killed by the insurgents, he'd have been left where he'd dropped........and they would have stripped him of his army issue stuff.....especially his radio and gun.
I think he shot himself as it was too much to take

His Flak Jacket isn't on his corpse, nor can we see his weapon.

I'm not sure I blame Mike for abandonning his son, I mean there are thousands of troops serving overseas who don't have their dad, he was actually quite lucky. He left his son in the safety of his billet to suck it up which is the best thing he could have done.

Get busy livin or get busy dyin, that's goddam right!

I felt sympaty for all of the soldiers/security guys, with the exception of the American. Mike and Danny were hardly admirable in their behavior, whether the infidelity or the pursuit of money and kidnapping. But the characters were well played, and you can really see the anguish and confusion and difficulty in having to try and make sense of the anarchy and violence they see in combat. Again, I'm not condoning, but they definitely got me thinking about how messed up it all must be, and how hard it must be to process it all and come out clean on the other side. Plenty of people do just that, god bless 'em, but I can see how easy it would be to get changed in a big way in the midst of it all.

I just finished watching this drama (on DVD) a second time since buying it a few years ago. Both viewings I found it powerful and moving. I felt very sorry for Mike because of the loss of his son. The loss of a son must be an utterly unbearable experience for any man. I didn't generally sympathize with Mike as a person, though. Falling for the Iraqi doctor the way he did was rather immature, I think. And he constantly risked her life with his thoughtless actions, which was also immature of him. A man of his age should have known better.

When I saw this message, I thought there must be something wrong with this individual to attack someone without saying why. Then I had a look at some of your other postings, which took up so little of my time since they are so pathetically short, confirming my initial impression that you are not exactly the most articulate individual in the world. Also, they are about films that only a kid or a moronic adult would watch.
