Horrible Title! And Kristen Stewart is a JOKE!

Saw a sneak preview of this in Toronto. It's TERRIBLE, and the entire time my friend and I watched it we kept whispering "who the FUCK is Spencer?" After being shushed by some rude members of the press, we left halfway through.

Kristen Stewart plays the same role Naomi Watts did ten years ago. But unlike Watts, Stewart looks nothing like the doomed princess save a few wide shots. The filmmakers also made the really bad movie Jackie, another uninspired titled that had Natalie Portman reinventing her role from Black Swan.

I feel bad for Generation Z. They just have such bad taste in filmmaking that they think loud is better, and if you aren't in a Marvel movie you don't exist in their iPhone conversations. I come from a generation that had amazing biopics. We're talking What's Love Got to Do with It with Angela Bassett as Tina7 Turner. And Helen Mirren in The Queen. And Robert Downey Jr as Charles Chaplin. These actors really immersed themselves in the roles without relying on CGI camera tricks and 4K camera angles.

Kristen Stewart is not a good actress. She's from the Twilight series, which like the Hunger Games, was made for high schoolers with bad movie IQs.

Spencer is a terrible name for a movie about a woman named DIANA. It's not even referencing her many lovers, or a nickname she had in college. We searched IMDB trying to figure out what it could possibly mean. But found nothing but Twitter posts from people in their early 20s who still think Titanic (1997) is the best movie of all time. Wow. I am so glad I was born in the 80s when there was a ray of light left in the film industry. It's all hogwash now. Everything is spelled out for you. There is no nuance. No subtle gestures. These actors playing other famous people might as well be on display at Universal Studios. It's all gimmicks.

FINAL GRADE: F

(we were so distracted by the manipulative music and bad title, we forgot to pay attention to the story).

Titles to watch instead on similar subjects:

The Queen, Helen Mirren (2006, Oscar winner for best actress)
Diana, Naomi Watts (2013, no nominations)
The Favourite, Olivia Colman (2018, Oscar winner for best actress; has nothing to do with Princess Diana but at least it's a high end film about a Queen and sadly was forgotten by the Generation Z groupies that can't sit still for more than 15 minutes unless the film has a super hero in it).

Yeah, the fact that this is from the director of "Jackie" is the single least promising thing about this mess.

In "Jackie", an untalented lead actress tried to play an icon and dominate the screen with raw emotion hidden under a veneer of elegance... and it sucked! Portman was terrible, in way over her head, the movie was terrible. And this looks like more of the same.

While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, some count more than others. It seems to be a lock that Kristen will receive an Oscar nom as all the major trade publications, film awards prediction sites and several mainstream media sources are predicting she will at the very least be nominated:

After a charged premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Pablo Larraín’s Spencer has become one of this season’s hottest contenders. A haunting study of one particular Christmas at Sandringham for Diana, Princess of Wales, as her marriage falters and the Royal fairytale turns grim, Spencer features a landmark performance by Kristen Stewart that has catapulted her to the top of the Best Actress race.

2022 Oscars: Best Actress predictions and the state of the race
Is this the year academy voters finally bow to beloved indie actress and former “Twilight” lead Kristen Stewart? The Oscars 2022 Best Actress race already feels as strong as last year’s knock-down, drag-out battle, but Stewart is the overwhelming pick among Gold Derby experts and user predictions for her performance as Princess Diana in “Spencer.”
Stewart’s performance in the Pablo Larrain film was hailed as a revelation by critics following the “Spencer” premiere at the Venice Film Festival and its subsequent screening at the Telluride Film Festival. The actress has already gotten some great advanced press as well, appearing on the cover of Entertainment Weekly in October, which wondered if she could be “crowned” queen of awards season.

This year’s Best Actress race is suddenly very competitive. For a while there, it looked like there was one solid frontrunner, Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in Spencer. She still may be the frontrunner. But one thing we now know: it won’t be a cakewalk.

‘Spencer’ Official Trailer: Kristen Stewart Is a Best Actress Oscar Frontrunner
Kristen Stewart has earned rave reviews for her performances as the British royal.
Neon’s first trailer for “Spencer” only lasted one minute and included just one brief line of dialogue from Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana, so it’s an understatement that fans will find a lot more to savor in the “Spencer” official trailer below. Pablo Larraín’s latest directorial effort is set over a single weekend as Diana contemplates the end of her marriage to Prince Charles. “Spencer” debuted to rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival, where Stewart became an instant Oscar contender in the Best Actress race.

Natalie Portman was also nominated for awards for "Jackie", when in fact she sucked. Sucked balls!

She was nominated for an Oscar for that amateurish mess, which just goes to show that for modern actors it's far more important to have a good publicist tell everyone you're a great actor... than to actually learn to act.

reply

Agreed. They should have cast someone who can at least act. Like Zendaya.

reply

HA!

reply

Kristen Stewart is a very good actor and will most likely win an Oscar for this film.

reply

Did you bother reading any of what my partner and me just wrote?? You don't win an Oscar because of your name and character you played. You kind of have to have depth to the performance you play too. This is another example of Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez trying to win Oscars based on their name alone, and failing (for the forgotten film Cake in 2014, and for Hustlers- which cost Lopez a nomination due to her cruel behavior with colleagues off set).

reply

Hustlers, was an entertaining film, but whoever started the Jennifer Lopez will win an Oscar for this is out of their minds.

Nothing about her portrayal of the character said Oscar.

reply

Heh, that’s how I felt about Witherspoon in Walk the Line. And yet

Hahahaha.

Variety's film awards editor says that Kristen is currently the frontrunner of the Best Actress Oscar Race. So let's hope it stays that way:

2022 OSCARS PREDICTIONS:
BEST ACTRESS

UPDATED: Dec 16, 2021

AWARDS PREDICTION COMMENTARY:
Kristen Stewart leads the critics’ prizes for her turn as Princess Diana in “Spencer” from Pablo Larrain. The Neon and Topic Studios drama may be incredibly divided with general audiences. Still, there’s an appreciation and respect to what she brings to the role, and she may have reached her moment in the awards circle after being passed over for strong outings in films like “Clouds of Sils Maria.”

Her biggest competition seems to be Lady Gaga as the murderous Patrizia Reggiani in “House of Gucci” from Ridley Scott. However, she’s already picking up a very high-profile win from the New York Film Critics Circle; she’s working the circuit and seems prime for her second acting nomination.

Whether of not Kristen will remain the frontrunner has yet to be seen. But one thing that is almost certain is the Best Actress Oscar winner will be one who is portraying a famous person:

Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana
Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani
Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball

Speaking on the topic of embodying real-life people, last year's Best Actress Oscar winner Frances McDormand won the golden statuette for portraying a lackluster, nondescript, uninspiring and fictitious character who lived her life as a nomad and formed no emotional connection with any of the other characters in the film. I mean, there is no point of reference on whether or not McDormand convincingly and realistically portrayed her character Fern, as Fern never existed.

So I don't understand why some naysayers are splitting hairs on Kristen's performance, claiming she did not look or sound exactly like the most famous woman of the 20th century and for this reason should not win an Oscar. In my opinion, Kristen came as close as any actress has ever come to realistically portraying Diana Spencer on the big screen and for this very reason is worthy of the golden statuette.

Of course, Kristen winning still depends on whether Kristen's portrayal was superior to that of Lady Gaga and Nicole Kidman. And to be fair, they too have naysayers, as the haters claim Kidman looks nothing like Lucille Ball while Lady Gaga has a Russian accent, not the Italian one she should have had in House of Gucci.

Her name was Diana Spencer. Any educated person knows that. You, on the other hand . . .

reply

That doesn't change the fact it's still a bad title for the movie and a bad actress for the movie.

reply

Yes, the title is terrible, which does mean that it is obscure.

reply

lol, it's amusing that OP did this review-final grade thing for a movie they didn't finish. Maybe you and your partner need a new hobby. This was as uninformative of a post as the two-sentence threads. TMC-4 makes better threads.

Hey, they're just kids with too much time on their hands and no discernible talent as of yet. Give them a break!

What is OP? I notice she had a cap on: OPP. I thought it was Ontario Provincial Police.

Her name is (or was) Diana Spencer. Her brother is the Earl Spencer.

Never been a fan of Kristen Stewart but she was amazing in this. The closest portrayal of the mad bint that was Di.

Diana Spencer would have been a better title.
