Misunderstanding of the purpose of Leper colonies

One thing that bothered me about this film was the section on Ghanan Lepers. The purpose of a leper colony isn't to sequester people because they are different, it is because Leprosy is a horrible, contagious disease and in a third-world country medical treatment for it won't be accessible to all of the small villages and towns in the region. Having them all in one place in close proximity to a treatment center enables them to receive medicine and assistance that could not be provided back home.

Not that I'm saying that people don't treat lepers differently or hold strange beliefs and superstitions about the disease, but they left out two very important reasons for the creation of leper colonies to work more of a sympathy angle.
