Not impressed

The hosts are just not charming and/or witty. They just seem to be trying far too hard to be the UK Top Gear instead of just letting it flow naturally. Even the studio audience look bored. Maybe if they sack these guys and try hosts that are just naturally funny, and don't have to try so hard to be funny, it might work. As it is, its just rubbish. Also the track is pathetic, its not even a full circuit.
I'm just glad with internet access I can still see the UK Top Gear.

reply

I agree with ben1_7 - wasn't funny at all and the track looked amateurish. I don't think Aussies can pull off the british dry wit seen on UK Top Gear. They seemed like odd guys too - what is with that weird mustache? Remember the fat guy that was on UK top gear for the first couple of seasons? They gave him the boot and I wouldn't be surprised if the producers shook up this show a bit too.

Hopefully it will get better over the next few episodes. But then, maybe I'm just jealous cause I didn't get on the show.

reply

I disagree with the idea that Aussies cant pull off the required wit, but I do agree these three didn't. The show is too wrapped up in the model of the Brittish one...they'd be better off starting the show design from scratch.

reply

Agreed, I think it's really sad too, the basic ideas of the show were good - because they were just ripped off from the UK version, but the hosts are just horrible.

reply

Agree with most of your commments - Top Gear Australia is a bad clone of the British version. It has potential but I think it was a very weak start to the series.

I also felt a bit cheated by some bits. When that guy launched the 4WD off the dune in the beginning of the show he landed hard, but that was all we saw except for a very quick shot of the front of the 4WD which showed it all smashed in. They never admitted to that.

I tuned in a bit late so ended up in the middle of the dune segment and couldn't work out what the point of it was.........also what was the point of the buggy in the shark cage???

I am the Night Rider......i'm a fuel injected suicide machine

reply

It's not a clone, it's a franchise. And the franchisee is owned by BBC Worldwide.

reply

It was ok, but Clarkson may and hamster totatlly own this version

reply

Yeah, I like the original too. Its funnier, unpredicable and they travel the world testing tracks/cars, unlike this version where they just imitate everything the hosts of Top Gear UK say.

And before someone comes on and says "Its not a ripoff, its a franchise", let me just say that getting three boring people to constantly quote things said by three people who know how to say a joke gets irritating after a very short time.

They call me the wanderer.

reply

Not original at all. They went to all the effort to make an Australian version, so they should have made it more australian and less generic. no matter how hard they try to make it interesting/funny/entertaining i do not think it is going to score anything more than AVERAGE. 4.8/10

reply

It seems that most clones are doomed to failure. Examples being the UK comedy "Steptoe and Son"..."Sanford and Son" in the US, and "Kath and Kim", the Australia comedy now with a US version.

With "Top Gear Australia", the main problem lies with the hosts and their mundane dialog.

First of all, get rid of the jerk with the moustache and work from there!

reply

The moustache guy seems to be the only one who is not forcing himself into a role, ie Pizzati=hamster and Cox=Clarkson.
IMO Cox is the one who struggles the most, while interviewing Nolsy he totally failed to ask what had been done to his XR8. Too busy following his scripted questions it seems.

I would really like to like this show, but I don't so far. I also think it is doomed.

reply

I've personally given up on the series. I'm sick and tired of the hosts (in particular Pizzati) and there's no individuality, as described in other threads.

Seriously, what's so hard about them coming us with their OWN humorous challenges???? They have everything at their feet and they're not using it...it's very frustrating!

reply

I personally like it.
Given they have bought a spin off, Being part of the 'TopGear' franchise, they would have hardly any creative liberty.
They could make it nothing like the UK one, but then you might as well not have bought top gear, and just started a completely new show...

I'm going to keep watching into season two... Give it more of a chance!
There's a new host, and the challenges sound pretty good (going off the internet buzz) I went to a filming and it was really funny!

reply

i completely agree.
Saying that its unoriginal and that its too much like the British version is overstating the fact that its supposed to be like the UK tv shwo. it is a spin-off after all. i hope this isnt coming through as aggressive because i dont mean to be, its just that so many people love the british one, which is all well and good, but its called top gear australia for a reason.

we should follow charlottea, give it a chance.

reply

Oh, this show is so embarrasing, but i can´t stop watching it!
It´s like a train wreck, you just keep on staring at the mayhem...
