Here's what I want you to do, I want you to go find a boxer in his prime and give him a free shot at your head. If you survive cool, if you die well you die and we'll know....
shareAll kidding aside, I sort of see the OP's point. It is a bit of a head-scratcher. We know that the bodyguard didn't mean to kill him. Usually, when someone dies from severe blunt trauma to the head, it's from a heavy object. He would have to know exactly where to hit him. I'm not saying accidentally killing him with a bare-handed punch was impossible but it was highly unlikely. They should have shown him falling from the punch onto some glass and maybe it cuts his jugular or something. That at least would have been much more reasonable.

But the fact is it can happen and seeing as this is based on a true story it may have...
shareI doubt if in real life they killed a guy and dumped him in the ocean off Catalina Island they would show it in the movie. They are basically confessing to a crime.
The movie was entertaining but seemed HIGHLY fictionalized.
while i agree this is probably part of the fictionalising of this movie, i can attest that 1 punch to the head can kill a man. especially one whom is predisposed towards a violent lifestyle, and has already sustained numerous blunt traumas to his head.

so basically, if he has had numerous concussions previously, or is currently suffering from one, it is very likely this could happen. though usually you hear about it taking about 24 hours for them to die from it.
so it is possible i guess, though i am sure this scene is if not pure, almost pure fiction.
the punch could have at least caused a severe concussion, and the fall through the glass table could have easily finished him off
shareWhy did it take 10 responses for someone to realize bleeding from the ear is a symptom of a concussion and that he passed out and died because of the glass table.
sharesame here. wife's step brother has been in prison for most of his life. He was drunk and got into a fight in a bar and he killed some guy who was trying to break up the fight, just buy punching the guy. He actually looks like Terry Crews.

One punch to the head? Not very likely put indeed possible. One punch to the face? I highly doubt it but still possible. I thought the punch was to the face in the movie so I was startled when I saw the blood on the phone and then big Russian guy acting out of sorts. A force strong enough to cause that kind of bleeding that fast would have knocked him unconscious first. Then he would have regained consciousness and had a moment of clarity (the lucid interval). After some time (up to a few days) the person would show a neurological or psychological disturbance and again collapse. This time there would be no revival. This portion of the film seemed to have been done out of haste. It should have been that the bouncer punched the Russian and the Russian falls back and breaks the glass with fatal results (as one post already suggested).
shareThat's the only thing that really bothered me about the movie, sure I guess it is possible, but extremely unlikely. Mike Tyson has punched a few people(not boxers) and Chuck Liddell has been in a few street fights too, and none of the people they knocked out died, so a punch to the face from Terry Crews, while I'm sure would hurt, would not kill a guy.

Has anyone thought that maybe the russian guy didn't die the moment he collapsed? Maybe he passed out and later drowned in the ocean after being dumped there.
None of the guys involved in that fight had any medical expertise and were already panicking because they didn't know what to do after what had happened.Maybe James (Terry Crews),in the heat of the moment, was just assuming that he had killed him (the mobster was pretty bloodied after collapsing on the glass table).
Also, did any of the characters bother to check Ivan's pulse or if he was breathing?
I'd say yes if Terry Crews punches your ass.
Are you serious? Of course you can. How do you think football players die during practices and in rare game situations? It's an extremely rare thing but if you're punched with extreme force when you are totally unprepared for it you could get bleeding in your brain or have particles of your nose cause damage in your brain. The situation in the film was very possible, and falling headfirst into glass and landing on his neck certainly didn't help the character either.
