Why is this film so underrated???

I just finished watching it and found it great. Excellent plot and cast - specially Jennifer Connelly and Greg Kinnear. The beginning is so good, that it reminded me of some Cohen's brothers comedy. I would give it a 9 if it weren't for some scenes at the end. Gave it an 8. It seems to me that religious people are not taking the joke and giving low rates without even watching it.

Typical...

It really isn't.

Just watched it and found it mildly amusing, mostly because of the cast. The comedy is broad satire and the characters stock stereotypes: the megalomaniac preacher, his crazy religious followers, the stoner Dead-head hippie chick, the Mexican mobster, the feckless "normal" guy stuck in the middle. It aspires to be biting and clever, but falls short. It's not on the level of Alexander Payne, for example, and a far cry from the Coen brothers. It's just okay. I don't think it's underrated.

I thought it was pretty decent. I agree with the material they could have done better. Though I was entertained through the whole movie, so I enjoyed it enough.

I really didn't expect to, but I enjoyed this movie immensely. Ed Harris was outstanding. I can't believe I'm saying this because in dozens of movies with Ed Harris, I found him to be smarmy and totally unlikeable but in this movie he has reached that point of maturity and experience where he really shines.

I agree that it is under-rated.... I think it deserves somewhere between a 6.5 and 7.2 Most likely the OP is correct and religious nuts (that is, the ignorant and superstitious types) are giving it low ratings because of their "faith" (delusions).

Its starts promising , but then they script takes a a nose dive and becomes very gimmicky and full of cliches.

really good actors but under used.

i stopped caring what happened 1/3 in.

Yeah, definitely underrated. It certainly wasn't a fantastic movie, I'd rate about a 6.5-7 or so. More enjoyable than a lot of what else is on offer these days, I'd agree that its rating has something to do with being down-voted by Christians.
